Hey, just wanted to let ya' guy's know I spotted CP #9017 in Tacoma, WA. this afternoon in the BNSF yard. I didn't think these were around anymore?
That's strange... an SD40-2F in the west. And not the Canadian west, either. I saw one in Calgary in 1998, and never again, and wondered where they'd gone. I knew they were still in service, and eventually I heard they were all assigned to the eastern provinces.
All the Barns are still in service. They were assigned out East to Expressway trains but now roam the system again. You still see them in Calgary every so often. There were 2 at Alyth a few weeks back. I think they may be based out of Winnipeg Manitoba for maintenance. grant
I don't get to railfan much, but I saw one on the tail of a consist on the old D&H east of Oneonta the other day. Didn't have the camera, of course. Frank
We see them from time to time in Montreal. Within a few months, I took shot of CP 9003, 9008, 9012 and 9013. Here's the link to them http://www.railimages.com/gallery/pierrelacombe?page=7 They are in the bottom of the page. Enjoy
It looks like I won't be seeing these any more - at least not around here (Grand Rapids, MI). I guess CSX was asking more than CP wanted to pay to lease the track??? [ March 14, 2006, 11:02 AM: Message edited by: Tim Loutzenhiser ]
All 25 red barns are still in service and are assigned to Winnipeg for maintenance. Although they are used mostly in the east, they technically can work anywhere on the system except the mountains west of Calgary or Lethbridge.
The Barns can go West it's just not favourable. With all the AC4400's running around they are prefered power west of Calgary. CP even tries to keep the first AC4400's east of Calgary also as they don't have steerable trucks. Of course that's what the management wants. Doesn't always translate that way to the diesel planners!!! You still see Barns west but not very often. grant
