Sometime about 1910 AR Rutan photographed this yard engine with its crew in Smithville, Texas. Rodgers built this mogul in 1883 in the Katy’s E class and they were converted to switchers by adding footboard pilots and a second sand dome. The class was very distinctive with their air tanks on top of the boiler. This is a very late appearance for the engine as it would be scrapped in 1912. I would guess that the man on the far left might be the yardmaster, next is the fireman with his ubiquitous number 2 scoop, then the engineer with his trusty oil can, followed by two switchmen. Paducah Geep IC 8078 with "frog eye" headlight and ox yoke air filter takes a break at Tuscaloosa, AL [01/1985].
Cool GP10! Those first-generation Geeps just won't give up. One sees something like that go by and it probably will make one want to stop drinking...
She's one of many Paducah Rebuild GP-10s. We had at least five assigned to the Gulfport, MS Engine Terminal.
Last light at milepost 3, BNSF Glasgow Sub. A self-propelled crane eases into a spur track, just west of Soo Tower in Minot.
Neat! I've been meaning to get back to Waycross. My last visit was in about 2003, but Kodak, USPS or the local photo store lost my film of that visit.
Some ex-NS coil cars, now wearing the reporting marks of the Gary Railway, a Transtar road. Also tucked in the consist of NS 38G were these switches. Certainly not Kato by the look of them.
As I understand it, the Gary Railway operates former EJ&E track that serves U.S. Steel's Gary (IN) Works. It wasn't included in the CN sale because U.S. Steel (via its subsidiary Transtar) wanted to maintain ownership of the line that serves its mill. I suspect that it also gives U.S. Steel competitive interchange options that might have been lost had CN assumed control.
