    Hi,

Just curious but back in the 1950's how was steel rail transported? Flatcar? Gondola?

    Thanks,

    Kevin

Back then rail was transported in 40ft gondolas, hence its 39ft length.

The 40 ft. gondola was the primary workhorse, with some use of flatcars. There were also some early versions of the bulkhead flatcar that were based on the 40 to 47 foot flatcar that saw service both for ties and rail. As far as the other part of laying rail, the ties, older stockcars, no longer suitable for interchange service, could be found hauling ties.
