    I would like to find a website or someone that can tell me what the Union Pacific's train designations mean. Any help out there? Thanks.

    Jim,

    Thanks for the link. Now, if I can just figure out how to download the program (Acrobat?) to make the other download work. Maybe tomorrow....

    Thank you for all your help. I did manage to download the information and clear up most of the mystery to my satisfaction.

    In case no one else wants to go to all the trouble...here is the answer to my question (as I understand it).

    Q = Quality Manifest
    NP = North Platte, Nebraska (Origin)
    HK = Hinkle, Oregon (Destination)
    B = (Special Condition Code) Multiple symbol sections ????
    02 = The Date

    This particular train had the UP 4328 on the point with 3 other units, 45 loads and 59 empties; 6624 tons and 7441 feet. It had the right amount of high strength drawbars on the head end so it was a single train. It did 15 mph up the hill (Blue Mts) with the units loading over 1000 amps. (This information doesn't mean much to me, but it is apparently significant to locomotive engineers.) I was told that if it had been a rainy day it is possible that the train would have stalled.

    I guess my next question is: What does "DPU" stand for? Any answers?
    :confused:
