Interesting pictures. I wonder how they pump out diesel fumes.

Well the ventilation is provided by shafts that are throughout the tunnels; they go from the tunnels to the streets several story's above.
However I grew up riding on the Subway and had never seen nor heard of this Pump Train that Oldrk, posted. Thanks I found that quite interesting viewing.

Is the equipment pictured actually owned by the MTA? Or of a contractor called in? If owned by MTA, they must have either planned ahead, or had previous flooding troubles?

I think it is owned by the MTA because I spoke with a Cousin that is still there in the City and he remembered that car and other MOW Trains of many different descriptions being in a Yard near to where he grew up.
Plus if you have ever watched the story of the "Redbird" Train it shows them on there in the yard. Nice DVD I must add

So it would seem they have experienced some previous flooding, to have that specific equipment on hand?

I would imagine when you build a network of tunnels below the water table, flooding at one level or another is a constant issue. Maybe not quite THIS bad, but...

True. But we never, ever hear about such things happening. Whether natural leakage or storm related... Nothing seems to normally be mentioned, that I can recall, concerning damage, shutdowns, delays, etc.
