jim not to discredit craig's stuff but i use jnj' 15" drop grabs for my grab irons with some gold medal model grab irons mixed in, usually use them for the grabs over the dynamic brake blower. walthers doesn't stock the jnj grabs anymore so i had to break down and order direct from them. the lift rings and wipers and sunshades are all on the gmm loco detail set. i will be ordering some cut levers from craig shortly so those are the only thing i'm missing on my units so far. craig thanks for the compliment, and i will post more.
No offense to JnJ, I don't like their etched grabs, they break too easily, as fat-fingered as I am. I prefer to make my own grabs, altho not as consistently uniform as Craig M's... I guess I'm just cheap.
Well guys i'm hoping that the SD40's arrive early next week. I am so looking forward to running them on the layout. Of course I'll be taking lots of photographs for the inaugural run of the locomotives. Now what type of consist will they be in front of???? I do have some MP grain cars but only 5 of them, hmmm could be a mix of fmc cars as well. Keep a look out for the arrival of these locomotives
Waiting for the arrival of these superb locomotives! I hope you will have a tape across the tracks for them to break
The locomotives arrived today they are excellent, I could not have wished for a better result. I special thanks to Mitch for the effort he has put into these locomotives. Here is a tribute to Mitch for his excellent work. This has been an excellent thread i hope you all have had as much enjoyment as me. [ 05. May 2003, 09:47: Message edited by: Colonel ]
I still liked them better in BNSF .But they look great now also.Mitch out did himself once again .Great looking pics also Colnel.Have fun with the new loco's.
Paul, I can't believe you coupled them to dirty covered hoppers The locomotives look great. This has been a really good topic to follow through to the arrival on home rails. No, no .......I must resist having some Mopac locos.....I must resist......
Very nice looking locomotives. Glad you are very happy with them. Part of the joy of model railroading. They look very much at home on your beautiful layout. While living in Austin Texas in the 1980's, I was able to see lots of Mopac locomotives. A freeway I took to work each day had a Mopac line running right down the middle of the highway median. I was always happy to see one going my direction so I could watch it all the way to work. The highway was called Mopac, what else. The engines I saw were normally a lot dirtier. In fact, toward the end, after the merger, the locos were still blue, but had the eagle scratched out and renumbered UP. Of course now they are all either scrapped or yellow and grey. Daryl
Back when I was in medical technology school in Ft. Smith, I'd make periodic trips across the river to Van Buren to shoot MP power. I got very used to seeing blue MP SD40-2s on the point of trains. Paul's pic of his new 6000-series diesels took me back to those days. Great job, Mitch! [ 06. May 2003, 06:53: Message edited by: friscobob ]
Thanks for the positive comments guys, the locos look so good and are now pride of the fleet. My roster is now looking more of a fallen flag roster of the UP and I now have MOPAC, SP, Rio Grande and of course UP. I would also like a couple of MKT one day to add to the roster
Yes- Katy-must have Katy- a small fleet of GP38-2s (and a GP38 or two) and some GP40s, all in John Deere green & yellow.
Oh, yeah!! Or in my case, SD40-2's in the same scheme for BN coal run-throughs! Gotta love that scheme.
