This topic is going to run over the next 6 weeks or so. I thought it would be great to follow this conversion as it has an International flavour to it as well this project is directly related to Trainboard.

You will recall the topic Mopac's new power this topic was based around Mitch (Mopac3092) posting pics of his custom painted SD80's in the MOPAC scheme. Once I saw them I knew I had to have a couple of MOPAc locomotives on my roster.

Rather than purchase a couple of loco's I have asked Mitch to paint me a couple of SD40-2's that I currently have as BNSF numbers 6799 and 6340. The reason I have selected these are because I basically dont run BNSF on the layout and I'm not a real fan of the paint scheme.

I will be sending this across the world for Mitch to detail and paint, they may not be totally prototypical but I can live with that.

Mitch will also be posting pics as the project progresses. Once it is all completed I will repost pics of the locos back on my layout.

Here are pics I have just taken of the last time the locos were on my layout. I will be posting these to Mitch on Monday, my guess is he should receive them in approx 10 days.

Thanks Mitch I really appreciate you doing these and once they return they will be the pride of the fleet.

    mitch,
I kindly defer the necessary time for these to our friend across the pond. Besides, we all know you would much rather paint Jenks Blue than Mule Black :)

    Colonel you'll love 'em

Oh I'm sure I will love them, the models are all set to be posted once Mitch replies to my emails :D I have asked him if it is easier if I send the whole models rather thanjust the shells.

You know, I really did not care very much for my BNSF SD40-2 "snoot" in H1 either (I had #6340). I like H1 units in general, but that snoot unit just looked odd in that scheme. So, I kitbashed it into an SP SD40T-2 :D

That looks great Mitch, will the SD40's have the large eagle on the side like your SD80's?

I'm sorry...did I hear that right? Did you just say you're not a real fan of the BNSF paint scheme?? And that you don't run BNSF on your layout?? Surely I heard you wrong... ;)

I sent the locomotives today so mitch should receive them in a week or so. At this stage Mitch will be chopping the noses to make them prototypical :D .

I look forward to seeing progress :D

colonel i received the locos today in the mail and will be starting on them in the morning, the first thing on the agenda is do drop them in the chameleon stripper and let it do it's thing and then chop the noses! i will put up pics as i go, starting with saying goodbye to that aweful green and orange paint! :D

well here are a couple pics, they are fresh from the first run in the stripper and have had the noses chopped, need to dip the new noses in the stripper yet but this will show what they are going to become. also colonel the numbers will be somewhere in the 6000 series, to keep with the dynamic equipped units the mopac had.

Wow what a difference already they look great with the chop noses. Hmm can you post some pics after they are totally stripped and the added details are installed?

colonel here are some updated photos, it shows most of the detail parts on except for the ones missing for decal work and also the beacon on the roof. the lift rings are on, the horn has been moved over and the bell mounted on the long hood, also you will see the nose headlight mont and the drilled out class lights. didn't get any when done with total strip, my wife ran off with camera so i got after the base primer is applied.
