I've got an old Con-Cor/Kato PA1 that's having some motor problems. It'll run at first, make it a couple yards, and then gradually stop. It's one of the early runs, 1972 according to Spookshow, and has a 5-pole squar-ish motor. Can't provide pictures currently, but I was wondering if anyone knew how to fix it, and if not, what motor it has to replace it?

Some part of the electrical circuit is passing electricity when its cool, but not when it's warm. This is almost certainly not a wire. It could be the brushes and a dirty armature in the motor, or it could be the truck swivel connection, or even dirty wheels and/or bearings.

    Disassemble, clean, relubricate.

I agree with inspecting the brushes/armature. One of the brushes in my PA-1 of the same vintage had evidently been arcing enough so it overheated and cracked. The heat also removed the temper from the spring. I kinda repaired it and it's been ok but I may have to eventually replace the brush and spring if I can find one that fits.

The real early ones had the longer motor and there is no plastic insert in the fuel tank area.

I fixed the one I have with flint and spring from a bic lighter. ITS been 10yrs and still runs great.
