I recently installed a WVD adapter and an ESU LS5 micro DCC decoder #58828 into a 2015 run KATO F3B unit. All went well without lights. So I have done the same install in the F3A unit and have strange issue.

First off the adapter is easy to install, the speaker was a little more than necessary as I milled the rear weight to accept a larger speaker, all went well and sound is great. However I have an issue with the headlight and the Mars light. I used very small LED's glued to the back of the factory light pipe after splitting them. Yes, I tested the LED's before installing. The headlight I put on the F0f tabs on the adapter. and it operates as it should. The Mars unit was put on Aux2 and then aux3 and they will not work. I mapped tit to F3. Nothing as the LED would not illuminate and not oscillate as it should. So I moved it to F0r and programmed it to come on with forward movement and still nothing. Oh BTW while it was on Aux2 I could turn it on by pressing F6 ? ? ?

I think I shall re-load the decoder file and start over. Any thoughts?

    Confused,
    Carl

Are you using resistors in the circuit to the LED's? If not they probably burnt out. I think I'd first check to see it they still work.

    Sumner,

Yes, they still work. No resistors required because the WVD adapter board has 1K ohm on each (all) functions. That info came from Rick B. and the adapter board manufacturer.

    Be well,

Sorry I missed the part where you were using an adapter board. What software are you using to program the decoder? Are you using the instructions and then directly/manually changing the CV's or using DecoderPro?

I did a ESU non-sound decoder install that I used some of the advance lighting options and figured out the 'change the individual CV' method and got it to work but it was much easier using DecoderPro to do the same thing. It took me a while to get my head around the user manual and using the Aux outputs in conjunction with the function keys and also how I wanted the light to work.

I've bought the LokProgrammer but haven't used it yet. DecoderPro made it easy to program the non-sound decoder. I'll use the LokProgrammer at first to play around with trying some different sound files on the sound decoders I bought.

Carl, this sounds as if you have a Function Mapping issue, and possibly haven't set the Mars light correctly in the Function Output tab. Did you adjust any of these outputs? By default, Aux1 and Aux2 are set as ditch lights (just the way the projects are) and F6 turns them on. On Function Output tab, make sure you set the output you are connecting to be a "Mars Light" in the drop down box. Then, make sure to map that output (e.g. Aux 2) to the function key you want to turn it on/off. (I tend to use F5 for Mars and F6 for ditch, but there is no standard). If you want it to come on with the headlight, select it (as well as front head light) on the F0 Forward row's Physical Output

Thanks guys for the input. I'll respond to each in a one for.

Yes I use ESU Lokprogrammer, I think the current is 5.1.7. Yes , I set the function output tab to actually the oscillating light as I think it looks better than the Mars rendition. I also set the brightness for LED mode and all that stuff. I did not know about, my fault for not reading enough, the aux 1&2 defaulting to ditch lights, no wonder F6 turned it on. Oh I should study the stuff more before digging in. Is that a male thing? ?

I did get it to working, however:

1st I removed the 58828 decoder to be safe
2nd I wicked all the solder off of pads aux 1&2 as well as F0r
3rd soldered a new LED to the aux4 pad and mapped it on to F5
Programmed it to oscillating light and set brightness in 1/2, same as I did the headlight

BTW, before I did all of the above I re-installed the decoder sound file S0711 totally.

When back together I'll do a short Y-T to demonstrate the A&B units sound

I think I have it just about where I want it so here is 4 minute Y-T vid that demonstrates what I have done. I need to tweak some sound slots but hey it's working:

Thanks for looking but above all, be well,
