All that oversize detail on that BLI doesn't really look realistic, though. It makes the model look too "busy".

And adding to that to get the fine size details needed one is going to be constantly repairing or replacing unless it is a display model or constantly left on the layout. I have been both routes from the super detailed to as is from the factory and for general handling I will take the as is thank you.

The MSRP for a Kato F unit with DCC (without sound) is $130.
Is the addition of sound plus a handful of oversized grab irons worth $100 to you?

The BLI F7's are vaporware. One site I found on the web that had these listed had them as "taking reservations" another listed them as "ETA To Be Determined". BLI lists their "expected delivery date" as April 2018 but how many "expected delivery dates came and went on their other stuff. Remember the M1? It was vapor ware for ten years. Then when it did arrive the price was higher. Ever hear of the adage about a bird in the hand?

Where do you see a "free" B-unit?
The MSRP from BLI for the A+B set is $300 versus $230 for the A unit alone.

Ah, yeah, I'm talking about street prices.... and a little birdie told me that BLI's supply chain is improving? I proceed with faith and a full heart :)

That Kato loco is still available from a few dealers.

The objective of the price comparison was to illustrate that the addition of some rudimentary electronics, a tiny speaker and a few pieces of bent wire can almost triple the price of a loco. That doesn't represent a good value to me.

I saw a HR 616 shell for $50, who in their right mind would pay $30+ for a plastic loco shell even if it includes the loco trucks.
