Yeah but the new owners of the Loop would have to do a restoration job...

    Boxcab,

If Fred has done his usual there are very few if any piping or gauges left. The boiler needs new tubes and flues and the fire box needs patching and relining. That in its self is probally well over 100 thousand. And then it on to the running gear.

I would say the best idea is backup your wallet and fix it or pick up the steam dome and drive a new engine under it.

I hate to burst your bubbles...but this Shay will not work on the Georgetown loop unless the railroad widens their gauge by 20.5 inches or pushes the wheels on the locomotive inward by that same amount.

Ahhh yes, the ole problem of the standard guage shay on narrow guage tracks. :D :D

Maybe someone could also get her sister #7 form Jamestown and run a pair of ex Pickering shays somewhere.

I was afraid of this being the case. And he probably wants a price equal to what it would be worth, after restoration.....

    Interesting turn of events...

    From Martin Hansen:

Buyer beware, shay NOT for sale
This is a case of "Buyer Beware". This engine is still owned by Fred Kepner of Merril, OR. The 3rd truck and line-shafts etc are with Fred in Merril. The owner of the property where the Shay is stored tried to unilaterally change the lease agreement for the engine simply to extort money from Fred.
The property owner then tried to hold a phoney (not valid under Oregon Law) foreclosure sale to try and claim "ownership of the engine". When buyers appeared to try and pay the storage lien they were told they could buy the engine but had ONE HOUR to move it.
This is one of the pit-falls of owning real steam locomotives. Sometimes underlying property owners change and this type of problem develops.
We are trying to resolve the situation now, but the owner has placed fake ads like this on the Internet before simply to try and increase his bargaining position.
Anyone trying to pay $5.00, let alone $50,000.00 for this engine is getting neither clear title or 1/3 of the parts to the engine. Again, Buyer Beware.

I've seen these types of situations before. They can be costly, confused, and drag on for years. And the engine might even end up being scrapped!

Frankly, I think its just weird...there are laws against someone selling something that does not belong to them.

The seller would have to complete a legal process. And obtain a lien. Then time would need to pass, before they could sell. I've heard stories about the loco owner. Am thinking the property owner is about the same type......
