I want to model a section of two different rail companys that parallel each other threw towns and country side. any photos of this already done or links of any kind of help or even places ware this happens that i can seach on tera server to get some ideas. Thanks!
Depends where you want to model Cajon Pass, Englewood Illinois, Delaware Water Gap, across the northern part of Ohio. All had competing railroads next to each other.
illinois central and GM&O were parallel in some places. The Joint line south of Denver is, well, it's joint. For modern lines it has BNSF and UP. I have seen mexican railways units, CN, and CSX on there too. For special trains they have the airplane train from boeing airlines, pretty cool to see. Lots of coal unit trains. Sorry no pictures.
Leeds - Irondale Alabama, Southern/Central of Georgia. Cary - Raleigh North Carolina, Southern/Seaboard (SAL and SCL).
Southern Indiana (later Milwaukee Road) and the Monon were prevalent in many southern Indiana cities, Bedford was a hub for them at one time due to the Limestone boom.
Hmmm... Niles, CA (Now Fremont, CA) had multiple rail lines running through town and Niles Canyon. Modesto, CA has two majors plus Modesto and Empire Traction connecting the two. Maybe its one major, now? I'm stuck on a borrowed dialup so I can't look quickly.
B&O and DT&I between Lima and Leipsic, OH. DT&I right of way still visible most of the way, and still DT&I (now I&O) track separate in Ottawa. Also, State Route 65 parallels between Columbus Grove and Ottawa. Also, many places interurban lines paralleled railroad lines.
Milwaukee Road and Northern Pacific thru western Montana, from Garrison to near Missoula... Now, only MRL.. Columbia River Gorge, UP/BNSF on opposite sides of the river. SP&S and UP, IIRC back in older days.
Just west of Union Station in Chicago. BNSF (ex-BN) runs parallel to the south of the UP (ex-CNW). To the west is Wood Street Yard or Global Whatever and Ashland Avenue Yard leading into Clyde Yard. Also, CSX and NS transfers and runthroughs use the south end of the US wye and the UP connects with the CN (ex-IC) via the St Charles Air Line. Try Google Earth or any of the mapping utilities that lets you see aerial images.
I model the Erie Lackawanna and the Delaware in Hudson in Western New York/Northern Pennsylvania. In my opinion two of the most colorful paint schemes. Rick
The Soo and the CNW ran next to each other in Van Dyne , Wi. Just had to throw that in there.LOL Adios Wyatt
In Sherman, TX, there were at one time four railroads that were parallel to each other, in a space of 1 1/2 city blocks. From west to east, south of the T&P main: MKT's SD&D branch out of Denison, TX A Cotton Belt branch from Commerce, which crossed over the next two lines on its way out of town southeast to Tom Bean and Whitesboro (Texas SH11 is on this ROW) Frisco's main line between Tulsa, OK and Irving, TX SP's Denison Branch from Dallas
This is a 1965 map of several RRs running parallel to each other in Peoria Illinois. Below is the same area (more or less--M&StL yards are gone and Interstate-474 has been built) as shown in TerraserverUSA. This site also has topographic maps that show the RRs (although, IMO, the topo maps do not label as accurately or in as much detail as the 1965 map, and there were numerous mergers between 1965 and the 1979 topo map resulting in apparently conflicting information. http://terraserver.microsoft.com/image.aspx?T=1&S=11&Z=16&X=692&Y=11260&W=1&qs=%7cPeoria%7cIL%7c This is a Sanborn Fire Insurance map from 1916... It shows 4 major RRs running parallel in Peoria Illinois, near Western Ave (about 1/2 mile northeast of the two maps above). This is another Sanborn map from 1916. It shows the RR I am modeling (the Peoria and Pekin Union Ry) in Pekin Illinois, about 10 miles south of Peoria on the other side of the Illinois River. I'll see if I can find some pics showing parallel RRs.
The Nickle Plate (NS) and the Water Level (CSX) spend a lot of time close to each other between Cleveland and Buffalo. Here is a Google satellite view of CSX (top) and NS (lower, with siding) in Perry, Ohio. Just west of here you can see the NKP veer away and the FP&E branch goes to follow CSX for a while before curving around to go under the Water Level. Also, NKP's famous 19th street running in Erie, PA was replaced by using the CSX ROW.
Berea, OH My favorite multiple line location is in Berea, OH. I am attempting to include a link to my Railfan album on Yahoo Photos which contains a picture I took recently of a Norfolk and Southern freight train on the far tracks by the Berea tower. The tracks in the foreground are CSX. http://new.photos.yahoo.com/jcbernh/album/576460762386158660
Seconding the B&O and the WM, they came as close as you could get along 17 mile grade, the WM's main right next to the double track B&O.
