    Hello.

I know this topic has been hammered to death but I really need the help of everybody on this one. I recently purchased an HO scale New South Wales Class 44 in the Candy Stripe scheme. I would like to know what is the best way of removing paint from Lima models, as I want to paint this model into the scheme of my freelanced railway. I am told Lima may use
acrylic paint. I really want this to come off with out a hassle because these engines are very hard to find it took my 15 years to find the one I have. This is what a Class 44 or ALCO DL500C looks like. Look at this webpage http://alcoworld.railfan.net/nswgr3.htm

    Thanks,
    Jorge

Jorge, congratulations on finally getting the loco you've waited for, for so long.

I don't know the "best way" to strip it down, but here is a product that I think you'll find very useful. I've never had any problems with it, on different types of paint and plastics.
    Check this:

    Good luck!

    Hello Bill.

Thank you. I am very excited that I finally have this engine! [IMG] I have repowered it with an Athearn PA drive that I shortened and I will be painting it in the light blue scheme of my Bronx Union Terminal and Transportation Railway. I will have to give the Chameleon a try as everybody is telling me to use it. I would like to post a pic of my paint scheme but I dont know how to do it on this board?

    Thanks,
    Jorge

    Jorge,

Is it possible not to strip it, but to just airbrush a coat of primer over it then paint your scheme on top?

I take it this is a plastic shell, if so try and find a 'like' piece of the same material and experiment with laquer thinner. That stuff is potent, it will destroy many objects it touches.
It will also rot your lungs.

Do all this outside. and use gloves

    Hello Chris.

I really want to strip it that way the new paint has a good foundation to sit on, plus painting over the old paint I feel hides the smaller details.

    Thanks,
    Jorge

I use 99.5% Isopropanol for all my removal needs. It is THE stuff, just let soak for 2 hours and use a old tooth brush to rub the paint away. I think you can't find alcohol with such a high percentage in pharmacies. Dad ordered some from their chemical provider for me ( he works in the pulp and paper industry ). I have heard you could get 91% isopropylic alcohol in pharmacies in the US, I was not able to find it up here in the Great White North.

    Jorge,
I hope you'll share those pics with us, especially after you have it all painted and lettered-up. We'd really like to see them.

To post pictures, just click on the "Rail Images" button at the top of the screen, and fillout the request. It's really very easy to use, once they put up your album. Also there is a forum here at TB if you have any questions. There is a lot of help there!
    Good luck,
    Bill
