Yeah. That's what is missing in today's railroads, all too often. It's initials and acronyms. Rust buckets and leasers. No ties to any community or area, via name recognition. No outward appearance of something in which an employee can take much pride, let alone the communities connected. Yes, I know- Dollars. Or is it, really?

This is why what the NS Corp folks are doing is really turning heads.

Interresting views! But I thought there were no more railroad at Promontory Point, less to say any operable locomotive...

There is currently active main line UP railroad at Promontory Point. This is further north, at Promontory, also known at one time as Promontory Summit. A lot of people mix up the two sites. Promontory was the original main line, until much later when the Lucin Cutoff was built and the new line passed through Promontory Point. The old line through Promontory was then abandoned. Later, the National Park Service built the re-creation you see pictured, on the old grade at the former site of Promontory.

As we proceeded down I-84 I kept my eyes open for a locomotive that I have passed on several previous trips. Here she is near Bliss, Idaho:

Exciting to see unmolested GT paint! Interesting to note WAMX 705 has a plated over rear headlight. The 40' steel stockcar was a neat catch from a bygone era.

Over the course of this trip I found a hand full of interesting things. I never knew that they had three levels in a stock car until I saw that one. I'll get some more photos uploaded soon to share with you guys.

Very interesting photos, Ben. Lots of great detail into railroading past and present there.

    Ontario, OR

Our next stop was in Ontario, OR. My son and I headed out to do some early railfanning while my wife slept in. We didn't see any activity but we did find the depot and a few pieces of UP MOW equipment.

    Astoria, OR

Several days later we made it to Astoria, OR. I snapped some photos of equipment that the Astoria Railroad Preservation Association has been restoring to bring the railroad history of Astoria back to life. For those of you interested in the Association you can visit their website here.

Our next leg of the trip took us through Garibaldi, OR.

Here is the steam engine shed for the Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad.

Just outside of town we stopped and looked at some POTB rolling stock.
