The almighty articulated cylindrical hopper! http://www.cnlines.com/cycl/hop/hop4.html I've been thinking for hours on how to built one of these but can't really think of anything that wouldn't ruin 4-5 cars.
I Would have thought you could do this with only two donor cars, both shortened at one end? What scale are you in...the Athearn center-flo would be a nice cheap donor to start with in HO scale...
I'm modeling N scale. The thing is that the body of the articulated car is curved but not as much as a cylindrical hopper and yet more than a centerflow. Also the two hoppers on the page I posted are one of a kind, and one if 66.5' and the other 55' long. I'd like to model the bottom one (shorter)... I was thinking about a slashed-in-2-pieces centerflow hopper body on a modified IM Cyl. Hopper underbody. Can you tell if the hatches are through or round? much help appreciated
See what you mean...hmmm. I think I would still start with a center-flow of some kind, as the ends appear closer...but still different. I would say from the 2nd and 3rd pic that it looks to have three circular hatches on each half, you can see them best on the 2nd pic, but they can also be made out I think on the left hand half of the third? One of these in a train would certainly stand out, best of luck with your project.
The more I look at those pics, the more I wonder wether it had trough hatches on one end and round on the other....it was a prototype after all!
Yeah, I noticed the hatches thing too. They also say that "additional references" can be found in : McKean, Bill; CN Articulated Grain Car, Mainline Modeler August 1986 maybe someone kitbashed one in 1986 ( when I was only 0 years old, LOL ) thanks
