Does any one know if there are any high nose sd45s active on the NS, and if they do does any one have pictures.
How many years ago? in the early 80's right before they changed to the black and white?or before the days of the red gray and black?
The last of the high hood SD45 locomotives were retired from the active Norfolk Southern roster by 1988. The majority were painted in either Norfolk and Western Railway or Southern Railway paint at the time of their retirement, with the exception of the following units which had been repainted into the NS "Thoroughbred" paint scheme: 1704, 1716, 1766, 1768, 1793, 1795, 1810, 3100, 3106, 3124, and 3145. The red, gray and black paint scheme you are referring to was that of the original Norfolk Southern Railway, which became a subsidiary of Southern Railway through a merger in 1974. From that point forward, the Norfolk Southern locomotives wore the black and imitation aluminum paint scheme of Southern Railway. When the current Norfolk Southern Railway was created in 1982 through the merger of the N&W and Southern, the original NS Railway subsidiary of Southern Railway was officially renamed as the Carolina & Northwestern Railway.
