Well everyone, I have done it switched from HO and moved into N , albeit reluctantly, its just the right size for my housing situation and modeling purposes. Glad to be aboard with the small scale guys [IMG]
Well my NS roster will be in need of some NS repaints, the GP40-2 seems in good order for it , but I do not know of any maunfactuers who produce these? Can anyone help me out with this, and also does anyone if any custom decal producers will make these or begin making these? Thanks again, Justin May

    Justin:

Atlas makes a GP 40-2. Microscale has 2 sets of NS hood decals, Walthers makes one. If you look through N Scale magazine (because I don't remember the manufacturer) there is someone out there who makes high hood conversions, I believe in brass. Welcome aboard!

Shell Scale makes decals for NS that are specific for the locomotive type. In fact, the last decal listing I saw from them only had NS decals. They also make number board decals specific for NS locomotives. I don't have their address handy (don't think they have a web site), but I believe they are based out of Virginia.

Athabasca makes a high hood short hood kit in brass, but there is another company that produces them in plastic (better in my oponion!).

    Justin,
Don't make any high hood GP40-2's, as the Norfolk Southern did not roster any (to my knowledge, unless someone snuck one in). They did have a few GP40 high hoods that they inherited from N&W, and most became "slug" parents. Of course, they will have the low nosed ex-CR units to repaint.

Speaking of high nose conversions, you can make your own by purchasing an extra undecorated shell (from Atlas) and using the rear end stripped of details, etc. to become a donor for the new high hood.

And even though my name is "Chessie", I grew up only blocks from a Southern yard, so I have seen a lot of Southern/N&W/NS units in my time!

I don't have a copy of the NS/CR loco roster available, but if you want easy renumberings (renumbering only w/o entire repaints) Atlas offered Conrail GP40/40-2's, SD60/60M's. Buy unnumbered units (or remove numbers only) and apply new "ne-number kits" as the prototype did. Kato offered SD40/45's as well, but I don't think any 45's went to NS, although some of the SD40/40R's may have.

Well thank you all who responded, but I should have clarified my request for information. I know that Atlas made the 40-2 and Athabasca is also the producer of fine etched metal high hood assemblies, but what I am after is the renumber decals used on the CR units allocated to NS via the merger. Forgive my vagueness, as it was very unclear what I was seeking, after re-reading my post. Well have another stab at it will y'all, I also have searched the Shellscale site and also Microscale's website for these but to no avail. It looks as if I might be using a custom decal maker before long, if no one makes them already. Thanks again and have a good one, Justin

instead of using the long hood of a shell for a high nose wait until atlas brings out the undec shells for the sd35 and cut the high hood and use that cab. i am also a big ns modeler and bash the heck out of everything, this engine is a blessing for me.
