Hello friends. I'm new in the industry, with only vague memories of "kid trains" in the 1950's. Having just completed a new log cabin kit in northern MA, I'm looking to do an overhead around the perimeter of the 13x26 open roof kitchen/living room, with sawmill and mill town scenery atop the kitchen cabinets, and a bridge over the kitchen sink cabinet gap between the two scenes. The scenes, with effective lighting, should show well from the adjacent open loft. Since the cabin is new, I'm trying to design the support system to have little to no impact on the cedar log surfaces, or gawky hangers. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Hi Footloose64, Welcome, happy to have you on board. What comes to mind is vinyl coated wire rope for suspension hangers, maybe 1/16" or 3/32" diameter, suspended from anchors in the ceiling or rafters. Hanger spacing would depend on what you select for your roadbed main support stringers. For instance a pair of light weight aluminum 1" channels or I-bars supporting a foam roadbed might allow hanger spacing to be as much as 6'. You mention "cedar", so a medium brown pigmented vinyl would allow the wire rope to blend with the cedar log background. Also the suspension hangers could be crossed to minimize sway.

    Welcome to TrainBoard!

Sounds like an interesting project. The viewpoint is quite unique, and I'd sure like to see photos as you go along with the process.

Welcome aboard! That does sound like an interesting idea, though the question raised in my mind concerns the height the layout will be at and how that will impact viewing it. Having said that, I also realize you probably have already considered that, so I'll just wish you luck on achieving your vision.
