I joined the British Region a year ago, and really enjoy the meets. A great like-minded bunch of modellers.

Nope, I'm not. Are there any real benefits in being a member?

When I am older--I may become a member. I have been told that the region I would be in is quite active-so I would enjoy being a member. However, I am still, as the other posts mentioned, wondering what all the benefits are?

    Is it like TAMR??

    Thanks for da help,

I joined this spring but have yet to receive anything other than a confirmation letter. I joined so I can do the 2000 national stuff in San Jose.

What use do I have for the NMRA? Standards! Other than that...NONE! I've met very FEW NMRA members that I have any sort of respect for. Generally, I find the majority to be alof and "restrictive" at best. It's almost a "country club" attitude, like if you're not a MASTER MODEL RAILROADER and model HO, you're nothing. Now please remember, I DIDN'T SAY ALL! I hope the members you have on the other side of the pond aren't like that at all. To sum it all up, I'd rather have my teeth pulled while wide awake than waste my time joining the NMRA. [IMG] I know PLENTY of MASTER MODEL RAILROADERS that aren't in the NMRA. If this offends anyone, sorry, but it's how I feel about it. [IMG]

Sorry if it's like that over there, MP. But all the folks I have met at the meets over here, have been extremely friendly, we have very enjoyable meets, and it is a good opportunity to pick up items at good prices, there are always plenty of stuff on sale.

When you go to a model rail exhibition/show, all the layouts, etc. are probably US. But the only place for us to see all-American, is at NMRA meets. Most shows here have a few 'foreign' layouts, but the majority are, naturally British, which I do not have much interest in, as the quality of the equipment is light-years behind Kato/Atlas, etc.

Well, I got my membership card today...

Is that all you get? I was expecting a packet of brochures, rules, magazines, standards, discount coupons, ect.

It's been almost 2 months since they deducted from my credit card.

    Hi all,

I used to be a member and left in 1990. I joined in 1985 at the Boston '85 show. I received their Bulletin and that was it. I never got the standards gage or anything else. Also, I found the thing to be a clique. The same people always got voted in as officers and the same people always won the contests no matter how many times I voted.

    Thanks for my 2p worth.

    John

I am a 20+ year member of the NMRA. I am very happy that I have been in the NMRA for this long. In the area that I live(So.Indiana, Louisviile KY area) the NMRA is very active. We meet at least once a month. Have a Division 8 swap meet twice a year, and a Regional Convention once a year.
To the ones that say that the NMRA is just a bunch of HO'ers, I say get involved. We have a majority of HO around here but N-Scale is coming on strong. You can get all kinds of things from the NMRA groups. There are a class of groups called SPECIAL INTEREST GROUPS (SIG's) that are a very differnt group. There are Layout Design Groups, High/wide Car Load groups, Electrical Wiring/Design groups, the list is endless. If you want help with something you can get it here.
Yes maybe the NMRA is not everybody's cup of tea, but it can be a very positive experience also.
I am not a Master Model Railroader and most likely WILL never be, but I still think the NMRA is a good group of modelers.

No, I am not an NMRA member. I am sure there are benefits but feel that I would only join if I belonged to a club. There isn't a club in Georgetown at the moment.
I could join clubs in Mississauga or Oakville but haven't taken that step yet.

    Thanks Alan,

Membership cards seem to be a good thing to me. We do not Have them in the TAMR, and I am in the process of trying to figure out why. When you go to a hobby shop that gives 10% club, org. discount, and they don't know who you are you are forced to use the honour system. Something becomeing rare in the world now.

Any way, that all for now,

    Dane N.

I have been a NMRA member for two years now. Generally, the main benefit in the Bulletin. Which for my money is good value. There are division meets that are like all else, some are real duds and others are really good.

If you can go to the national convention or at least the national train show. You will be glad you did.
