Kadee has just released a new Seaboard Air Line painted car in their lineup of outstanding HO scale cars. This car is supposed to represent Seaboards beer transport cars and is done in silver with a black roof and black lettering. Of course, there is the usual red heart as well.

Go to Kadee and check it out.

It's a great looking car. What year
would this car have been painted this way
    and used to transport beer?

These cars were originally regular service PS1's. They were shopped and equipped with insulation on the inside and then painted silver. I don't have an exact date but they were done in the early 60's I think up to the merger with that other road.

Also, on the model, the roof is black. This is incorrect. The roof should be silver like the rest of the car. A black roof would defeat the purpose of the car. Black would just make the car hotter while the silver roof would reflect the sunlight and thus helping to keep the car cool.

Further examination of the photo on KD's site reveals that the roof of these cars is indeed the same color as the sides. There is a slight shadow that is right along the leading edge of the roof that makes it appear that the roof is darker than the rest of the car. Whew, glad that this is the case. Kadee did an outstanding job on this car and frankly, I will be buying several for my future layout.

Got my freebie sample from Kadee last night, wow, what an awesome car. The lettering is just perfect. The only disappointment is with regard to the yellow box in the area of the road name and number. That box is supposed to contain routing information for the car and it is not included on the model. The yellow box is there but the lettering is not. Hey, I can live with that though. Now, I am working on them to do a SAL car in their 50ft. series of PS1's. Man, a "Green Hornet" would be awesome.
