    Hello everyone!

I´ve been looking around this forum for some time now and finally registered as a member. Primarily interested in swedish prototypes i just can´t stay away from also delving into american railroading.

As of now i don´t have a layout of my own, however i am a member of a local club modeling the local station (sveg in Haerjedalen, Sweden) along the Inlandsbanan line.

    Have a good one!

    /Jocke

    Welcome to TrainBoard!

Is your American railroads interest of current operations, or perhaps something from the past?

    Hi, and thank you!

I´m a big fan of several fallen flag roads such as Milwaukee Road, Virginian, Pennsy, Great Northern, New Haven. Just to name a few. Guess you can tell by those roads that i have a thing for US electrics.;) Well, diesels and steamers too of course. My tiny H0 roster of american locos consisits of two VGN class EL-C, one VGN FM H16-44 and one PRR GG1. Also two NP GP7´s are hopefully on their way shortly.

Interesting! As you can see by my avatar, I am a Milwaukee Road fan. Multiple family members worked for that railroad. (Plus some other railroads.) Many friends and memories. I grew up living nearby to a busy NP branch line. My schools were all located right beside their tracks.

An odd thing, the (second) depot on my old home town was demolished before I was born. It was a lumber mill community, with quite a few folks who had come from Sweden. When I was searching for a photo of that old depot, guess where I found it? In Sweden! When the Great Depression hit, one family had moved back to Sweden. A relative still living in our town helped me to make contact and get a photograph copy from their kin in Sweden.

Welcome aboard, Jocke. Many folks over this side who are also interested in the older electrics, and I've seen some write-ups in the past on folks who have done some truly amazing modelling with live overheads. If you can, it would also be quite interesting to see some photos of the railroad equipment and operations you see, as I don't think we've had much from your piece of Europe.

    Thank you Eagle2!

Well i´m not much of a photographer but i can submit at least a couple of pictures (although i do have more). In May of last year there was a steam excursion trip with an ex SJ (swedish state railway) class E2 steam locomotive pulling a mixed "historic" passenger train. Ex SJ T43 #222 acted as helper. Both o f these locos are currently owned by the IBAB company. The last image shows my H0 scale model of T43 222 in its "as delivered" look. BoxcabE50: Yes i couldn´t help to notice that that nice looking avatar.

Not meaning to be contrary, but I think you do just fine as a photographer! Cool to see the plow arrangement on the E2, a very nice paint scheme on the T43 and a good looking model!

    Thanks all of you!

Eagle2: There are also E2 locomotives with full "norrland" snowplows, similar to the ones on the swedish Dm twin unit and Dm3 tripple unit electrics. The T43 has traction motors from ASEA and an EMD 567 motor. The inlandsbanan line uses primarily EMD engined swedish built diesel locomotives of the Di3 (ex norwegian NSB), TMZ (ex danish DSB) and T43:s. Here´s an "old dane": TMY #106 from The swedish Tågab company: DSC02043.JPG

You may wonder about the "familiar" paint scheme on the TMY. This loco was used for a movie shot in Sweden in the late 1990:s. The name of the movie is "Dancer in the dark". The events in the movie takes place in northern united states but for some reason the production company chose to shoot it in Sweden. The paintjob was supposed to come off right after the movie was finished but Tågab decided to retain it. No 106 is still wearing these colors and is currently being worked on by Tågab to be pressed back into service.

Hi Jocke, Welcome to the Train Board, glad to have you on board.

With your interest in electric railroading, are you planning to erect catenary systems and power your locomotives from the overhead wire? Sixty years ago I had an HO Great Northern Z-1 Boxcab and tried to solder my own catenary. The catenary was successful on the straight track, but the solder joints failed on the curves with the contactor wire tension offset to the inside. I wish now that I still had that locomotive because the model catenary systems available today are modeled realistically and strong enough to power locomotives.

    Thank you Hank and Fitz!

I am possibly going to bild a short portion of the Virginian in as a modular layout. If i do put up catenary i will probably "cheat" and use european wire (Sommerfeldt or Märklin) together with scratchbuilt poles. The spacing between the wires is to wide but i think i can accept that because of the rigidity in those manufacturers wires. Using the catenary to power locomotives seems like a good idea only if you run DC. In DCC there´s really no point i think.
