From Michael Palmieri on the Yahoo group kcsnotes:

"EMD SD70ACE prototype units GMDX 72 and 73 are on their way from the AAR test center in Pueblo, CO to the KCS at Kansas City on the BNSF. They are suppose to be tested in helper service. I think this will be their first use in real service."

What, you may ask, is an SD70ACE? Well, according to Sean Graham-White, it is thus:
"The SD70ACe is the Tier II emissions AC model for EMD. It replaces all other AC freight road locomotives in EMD's product line starting January 1, 2005. There are currently four EMD demonstrators --GM70-GM73.

EMD's Tier II emissions DC model will be the SD70M-2 (yes, I'm serious) -- it will replace all DC freight road locomotives in EMD's catalog. There are currently no demonstrators of this model.

Basically, they look similar to the SD90MAC-H with the Phase II cab as worn by the late UP SD90MAC-Hs and CP's SD90MAC-Hs. However, they are slightly shorter and do have a few other design differences. Both models contain GM's 16-cylinder 710G prime mover rated at 4300 HP."

Again, from the kcsnotes group on Yahoo

Update: the demo pair is being used in helper service, shoving coal trains south of Heavener, OK over Rich Mountain to Wickes, where they cut off & run light back to Heavener (or shove a heavy northbound back north).

To keep track of EMD71 and EMD72 (the demos), go to the KCS website and use the equipment trace feature.

Update: the two demos have left the railroad via Kansas City, their 60-day demo ended. No official word, but according to unofficial sources they liked them. Not sure if this will result in more of this type locomotive being ordered by KCS, given their predilection for secondhand power.

here's a related question. i came across a copy of the epa's claen air nonroad diesel rule summary from may '04. i was skimming down through it and it gave mention that this year locmotive and marine diesel engine standards, etc. etc. the part that caught my eye was it mentioned provisions for existing engines. has anyone heard anything about this? will it be some kind of refit, or what?
