What's the history behind this color scheme?

looks like it use to be a gcfx/gec alstom leaser maybe? [paint doesn't match along the car body where the gec alstom logo use to be]

I think that GTW (Grand Trunk Western) has been acquired by the CN. [IMG]

    Nice photos...

I saw a similar 5xxx series "CN" unit that was sublettered GTW...

Those weird rear single headlights still spell "CANADIAN" to me...

The GTW 5900 series and the WC 6900s are former CN SD40s rebuilt by Alstom to SD40-3 specs and originally leased back to CN. Now they are being renumbered and designated either GTW or WC. The colour in Pierre's photo seems to be a little off, they were battleship grey in their original rebuild to SD40-3s.

Also those weird single headlights are back up lights just like you have on your vehicle.

It was always a subsidiary. I don't believe it was acquired.
