I have a LIONEL 242 and 1602 steam engine. I believe they need lubrication. Is there a video or photos somewhere in this forum that show where exactly to lubricate an engine?
Is it making noises? What are the symptoms? I doubt we have anything archived to help with specific model lube instructions. For those, I'd try Lionel, TCA or TTOS. Boxcab E50
I was wondering if there was a problem, which was causing some worries. You do need to inspect and conduct some occasional preventative maintenance- And that sounds like what your concern is at this point. Those oils you mention will work. Myself, I would prefer to go with a lubricant more oriented toward the model railroading hobby. Such as the LaBelle brand offerings. Whatever you choose, use it sparingly. A tiny droplet will usually suffice. Stay away from any of the electric components. Just do gear train and axle bushings. Don't worry about any unpowered axles. Boxcab E50
Another quick question: WHat is the difference between using good old O gauge track and the newer Lionel FAStrack? What does FAStrack have to offer thats better?
Personal preference? There has never been a problem with the old three high rail style track. So perhaps it's simply the way newer stuff looks? Where to get the FASTrack cheap? Good question. Probably some web searching would give a idea if it can found at a nice discount? Boxcab E50
http://lionel.com/Products/FindexProduct.cfm On this page you can just type in your cab number and find the original manual online. I found a maintenance section when I typed in 1602. I'm not home, but I think I have the same NKP loco. Cleaning and maintenance were straight forward.
