I recieved an LGB "Limited Edition" Coors refigerator car for Christmas. I have no track, engine ect. but I am interested in picking up the hobby. I like the car but have no idea what the appropriate engine for the time period/region would be. Can anyone offer suggestions for what types of engines I should be looking for (steam, diesel, Santa Fe). Also, what lines might it have run on and what forums on this board should I look at for this genre?

Hello Monroe, welcome to Trainboard and G scale modelrailroading!! [IMG]

First of all, G scale people are more than in other scales focused on the fun of running big trains.

This means you can run your car behind the locomotive you like most.

Actually you can run your car behind steam or diesel locomotives.

Now you have to know the space or size of the track you want to run it.

If the space is small I would go in steam for the Aristo Rogers steamer or in diesel for the critter locomotive. The USA-Trains 44-Tonner diesel or NW-2 would also a good choice.

If you think you could run longer trains then you can choose what you like [IMG]

You can find the USA-trains website on:

    and the Aristocraft one on:

just have fun with your trains!!!!!!

My best wishes for a great 2001 [IMG]

If you have an inclination towards steam, the Bachmann 0-4-0 Porter is an excellent choice. It is quiet with superb slow-speed characteristics and the price is right: less than $50 from mail-order dealers. Check out the ads in a recent copy of Garden Railways magazine.

Yes, I'm now a G-scale junkie. Quite a jump going from N to G, but the eyesight isn't what it used to be when I was younger! If I ever decide to move back indoors, I will probably go with On3. Something about narrow-gauge steam really got to me.
