Saw one of those articulated rigs yesterday pulling out of a lumber yard. I've been painting and decaling a couple Kato RS2s for the SP&S. 001small.jpg

Just finished up the last of the decoder wiring and rear LED install on this. It's been painted for about 2 months now.

Finished painting and decaling both RS2s. Scratch built and installed steam generator exhausts - looks like SP&S made their own exhausts. Need to add the SG intakes.

Nice job on those. Several of the SP&S RS units received their steam generators from the first F-3s when they installed larger units in the F-3s. Probably because the short hood was not as tall as the car body of the F-3 the stack from those stood a little taller on the RS units.

    Hi John,
I read that the RS2 steam generators came from F3, but the difference in height between the F3 and RS2 didn't don on me. Thanks for the info.

Lengthening some MTL gondolas to the correct 52'-6" length the one pictured is the first attempt, just ordered an xacto miter box for more precise cuts to make the task easier, I basically make 2 cuts per end and add strip styrene. Then paint match add weight and new bolster with blma wheels to have correct ride height and body mounted couplers. I plan on doing a good number of these to have a fleet of earlier gondolas with older road names on my late seventies era layout. IMG_20150729_193414.jpg IMG_20150730_084602.jpg

Silly question. Why not just buy some 52'-6" gondolas? Atlas makes them. and Trainworx makes a 52' that looks like those. Still, good job on the splicing.

I got those too the MTL's are an earlier prototype which I need for my B&O and other 60's era road names I had bought quite a few of the MTL gons several years ago and like all the schemes such as P&LE and NKP that they did. But I got the BLMA's, Athearns etc. Gondola trains are some of my favorites a lot of weathering etc.

Even if there was no caption and not yet painted, they sure stand out as being SP.

It is always fun to see the "in progress" shots, where all the different part makers and materials stand out. Please keep sharing as they progress!
