Unless you intend to share the vehicles across multiple modules at different times, I'd glue them down. One less thing to remember to pack and set up at a show, or to pack up afterwards.
Joe, as many things can eat time unexpectedly while setting modules up at a show, I would say to glue the cars down. One less thing to worry about.
Thanks Andy, thanks Deacon. You both make good points. I’m convinced, gluing them down is the way to go.
This module is pretty much done. I’m waiting for some glue to dry and then I can glue down the DQ, the gas station and the building on the left and lastly the vehicles. May add some bushes but I’m pretty happy with it as is. Now onto the next module.
Thanks Richard. It was indeed fun. I love running trains but working on the layout and modules is also lots of fun.
I started working on the next module. The road and raised area for the station are glued down. The station and houses are placed to get a feel of how it will look. I made the station platform from spare parts. The Walther’s station is the same building that is in the modern gas station kit. The platform roof, base and brick columns are not used in this kit but are included because of the molds. I cut a piece of white plastic to go under the roof and glued it together. It was pretty easy and I think it looks good, a lot better than just the station building by itself. Painting open areas brown and adding ground cover is next. I’ll post more photos as I make progress.
Good info to know about Walther's reuse of structures in different kits! Any other examples where they did this?
The ranch and cape cod houses both come with extra parts. The ranch has both a picture and a bay window and a few doors and some other parts so a few houses can look a bit different. The cape cod has another roof option with dormers and extra doors and some other parts for the same reason. There might be others with various options to customize the kit or where the same basic structure is used for two different kits but I don’t know about them if they exist. I have two more Walther’s kits but I haven’t opened them yet. They will go on my layout so I’ll post about them in that thread when I start working on them.
Walthers n scale look a likes to my knowledge are below. Some differences between the kits in number of parts, details, signage but these are similar: Modern commuter station and gas station (above). I have neither. George Robert’s Printing & Variety Printing. Variety uses the front walls of Robert’s as a background building. Variety is currently out of production. I think. I only have Variety. Hardwood Furniture and Bralick Building. I think the only real difference is the latter is out of print and has more modern windows as if the former was turned into apartments or office space. I have a couple of Bralick for Kitbash. Superior Paper and Metro Power and Light. Latter is just the Kraft mill(?) from the former, without the brick building and some of the tanks. Supposed to be a modern coal power plant. Latter is out of print. I have both kits. —would like t State Line Farm supply and Classic Car restoration. Latter is out of print and I think the only difference is signage. I have both kits. The machine shop and Railcar restoration. Latter is out of print. I have one, looks like the biggest difference is the latter has a storage tank where the smokestack for the machine shop goes. Modern concrete warehouse and UPS warehouse might be identical except signage. I have former. Modern steel warehouse and modern steel transload are almost the same. I have both. The latter comes with a Railcar pull through door on the short wall instead of a wall with just large windows. Transload also has one long wall without Railcar doors while the former has a long wall with two Railcar doors. Both come with a long wall with four truck docks and a short wall with three truck docks and an office. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I finished the second module this morning. Here are 2 WIP and 2 finished pictures. I have 3 more modules (2 corners and 1 double straight) to scenic. I hope to have them done before our next train show on September 7th. I’m not sure I’ll get all of them done but I’ll have at least 3 finished.
Thanks Deacon. I’m highly motivated by the upcoming train show. I’d like to have as many finished modules as possible for the show.
Looks great!! I like the double modules the best, IMHO they are the best balance between portability and scenery options.
Nice work! I also like the orientation of the houses, and the street between them, at an angle to the module boundaries.
What is the road system you are using? I see the extra on the right side. I found my cheap road that came with my N-Scale 40 pack of cars for mock-up. Of course it's just me actually looking at it, so maybe I'll just use it. But looking for other options. And is your gas station base just foam board?
