Yes MK, there is a florescent drop light about 9 inches from the depot making it look a bit shiny and it is a little bit When I get the model complete will do weathering and spray it with dull coat as you suggest. Thank you for your response. Joe
Here's the part of the layout that has some scenery, module 05, 06 and 07. The oil depot platform measures 8.2 inches long (109.3 feet), 1.3 wide(17.3), 1.5 high (20.0) and the height of the platform deck is 0.80 inches (10.6 feet). The deck. is level with the top of the ladder on the tank car. I think I will take a break from the oil depot for just a little while and work on the ice house platform tonight. Joe
Thank you Phillip for your compliment. The bridge project was started around mid February and 95% complete on April 8th. Still need to add safety ladders and stairway, the bridge is 45.5 inches long. You can see the build process on page 22 to 28, there is a video on page 25. Joe
Friday night i finished the roof structure and cut out the roof. I was hoping to finish the ice house platform before midnight Sunday but called it a night at 11pm. The roof has been installed and all of the support beams on one side. In the morning will install the remaining support beams, cross braces, handrails and ramps to go between the platform deck and railcar. I used a photo from a Walthers kit ad to design the platform. Joe
Looks great Joe! Wonder how they got the ice to the second platform on that Walthers pic. Seems like the ramps would hang up on the platform nearest the ice house.
Joe Lovett, your persistence has paid off. You have a great set-up there! I completely understand "calling it a night". Fresh perspective equals better output.
On the usual platform setups, there is a removeable platform that goes across after the cars that are to be iced are spotted. There would be multiple on the longer platforms.
Thank you guys for your compliments! I got as far as I can go on the ice house loading platform, ran out of 0.030x0.060 styrene strips again. Luckily LHS is only six miles away, this will be the fifth package used over four projects. Tonight was able to finish all of the platform structure, make four ramps and painted it Golden Brown. The roof is painted Black for now, will install fine grit sandpaper on top. Next is match cut the bases for the ice house and grain mill and install handrails with the new strips tomorrow afternoon. This should pretty much finish the platform less stairway. My next projects are the ice house building and the Frisco Ft Smith Depot as it looked in the early 50's. Joe
MK and John, i was thinking about using square clear styrene for the ice blocks. Do you have other suggestions? I need to find out how big they are. Will measure the opening on a refrigerator car to get width and height and guess on the length. I figure they are two or three times the width. Joe
If you can get the clear stuff the right size then treat it to a quick light wash of nail polish remover. The resulting glaze from the Acetone should frost the clear plastic to look like ice.
Looking around for fun I found that the ice was cut into 22 inch wide pieces. So I was thinking that a scale 24 x 24 inch block would probably be right.
Thank you John for the dimensions. With that the length should be around 42 to 48 inches. Is that what you think or do you have another length in mind? I'm going to call the ice house Blue Ice Company. It comes from when airplanes used to dump the toilets during mid flight and what came out was a big chunk of blue ice. It reminds me of working for Boeing on aircraft manufacturing in Tulsa OK and Palmdale CA. Joe
