Congratulations! That's a sweet machine you got there. I am shopping DSLR's now and have that on my list.

As someone currently shopping cameras, I'd like to hear your reasons for settling on the NIKON.

    New toys are always great!!!

Of course, you might want to get that picture straightened out first. :teeth:

My only qualm with the D40 is that Nikon makes you use their lenses with a built-in AF motor if you want AF. What's up with that? It's still better than buying a XTi and becoming a Canon-slave, though... I went with Pentax.

What lenses do you have for your D40?

Wow, talk about an upgrade! That's like moving up from a Pinto to a Cadillac CTS-V!
I look forward to your pics!
Did you buy it? How much was it, if so? I would like to upgrade to DSLR in the near future.

Yea I noticed that the picture is crooked. I only have the lens that came with it. 18-55mm but im looking to buy a 70-200mm lens for it sometime in the close future!

No my mom bought it for me. Its kinda my very early christmas present but oh well. Its on sale at a local camera store for $539.99 but I think the orignal price is $599.99. Its a very neat camera!

    A 70-200mm would be a good investment. I have two auto-focus lenses, a 18-55 and a 75-300, as well as a MF 70-210 and 50 prime.

Congratulations on the D40. I have the D50 and absolutely love it. I have these 3 Nikon lenses: 18-55mm 1:3.5-5.6G(kit lens), Nikon 55-200 mm F/4-5.6G ED AF-S DX Nikkor Lens G & Nikon 70-300 mm f/4-5.6G VR ED AFS Zoom. I recently purchased the 70-300mm and love it. The VR technology is great, but it will run down a battery quickly when switched to active. If you are willing to wait and save, this is the lens to get: Nikon 18-200 mm F/3.5-5.6G ED-IF AF DX VR Lens. I have barrowed one and find it to be increadible for train photography. A bit costly, but well worth it. Next for me is an upgrade to the D200 or D300 camera body.

Look forward to seeing your photos. You are going to love the new camera.

Good choice. You will enjoy using this camera. I have had my D40X for little more than a month and it is getting busier by the day. I bought it with two lenses, the 18-55 mm, which comes with the standard kit, and the 55-200 mm, with VR (Vibration Reduction). I have found that I am using that longer lens more than originally anticipated.

Have fun with your new camera.

Peirce, with all of your experience in photography, I'd like to hear your opinion of your D40X. I can't believe the quality of the photos I am getting from the D50. :tb-confused:

    Fitz,
I am very happy with the Nikon D40X. I bought it the day after Labor Day, and so far have used it for wide variety of subjects. These include softball tournament games and practice, a flower show, a crew regatta, animals and birds, table-top photography, fireworks, a church supper, and to memorialize an apple pie I had just baked. Here is a sample of that last item:

This should give you some idea of the variety of types of shots this camera can handle. The last one is of one of my HO Moguls.

If you have any more specific questions about the D40X, just ask.

This thread is a huge help. I have narrowed my choices to Canon Rebel XTi 400D; the Olympus EVolt 510; or the NIKON D40x.

The Nikon shots on this thread are "swaying" me.

Great shots, Fitz. I especially like the lighthouse shot. The initials in the pie crust are for our church (UCC = United Church of Christ). This pie was entered in a contest at the church and took second place. Here is one more example which shows how sharp an image the D40X creates.
