I recently discovered and acquired a few 86' boxcars, and similar to other "projects" that I have ventured into, have found myself adding more and more of these to my collection and weathering victim list. I really like the size of these beasts, and between Trainworx and Bluford Shops, there are dozens to choose from, which is really dangerous for me. Anyway, I am curious how many other modelers have found a home for some of these "big ugly's" in your own collection, and whether anyone else is dirtying them up like they so often appear.

I have about a dozen of these so far, but have my eyes on others currently. Here are a few of my weathered pieces either finished or in progress:

Weathering on those looks fantastic! I have about 20 right now and think they are a very detailed model. I really like them. Some day I will get around to weathering them too. Keep up the great work and photos! :)

John, yer killin' me here. There's WAY too much UP going past Belton, MT! :p
All kidding aside, you did a fantastic job weathering them. I have a handful of the Bluford and Trainworx cars as well, and love them all.

Just don't forget about the occasional patch out for those that don't like all that darn graffiti... :) I seem to be in the same 86' rut as of late...but they are just to irresistable not to beat up on...

Would have to say I'm liking the fading on some of those.

Of course the B-52 squadrons refer to their craft as BUFF's and Big-Ugly is only the first two words.

    JDAY,

I've documented some of my weathering techniques on my blog, especially a fading technique that I learned by observing some techniques shared by Gary Hinshaw. If you are looking to get started in weathering, the fade is the best place to start in my opinion, and the technique I am using now is almost fool proof.

Here are some references you may want to check out:

Very nice HuskerN and Brian! I don't have any of these cars myself because I don't recall ever seeing any on Tehachapi, but I might have to pick up a few because they are so cool.

I have seen lots of 86 boxes on the loop until about 95.

Here is a real oldie. An old Trix that had one of those ugly thick roofwalks. I took it off and filled it in and painted it silver.
