weathering looks great. however, some minor distractions on your ac4400.

all the warning decals on the locos are missing. there are dozens on the shell.
then the handrails should be red and black.
if you consider renumbering the loco then make sure you use the correct stripes on the sills. some are white, some are red/white.

check this pic of #9509. not weathered at all. but those tiny decals and the painted handrails enhance the look.

loco was renumbered by me. the tank car behind was custom painted by me. picture taken on my old layout (soon to be torn down)

I use a black Sharpie to do my handrails.

    Now thats a great idea!
I wonder if the white sharpies would also work (covering the red)?
Would be better than painting I guess.

I have tried sharpies but they seem to run when you blast them with dullcote...

Wet Dullcoat does bleed the Sharpie ink. I use Sharpies after everything else (including Dullcoat) has dried.

I am now working on altering the walthers 48' CP Thrall wellcar into a 3-unit (drawbarred) set of NSC 48' CP wellcars from the 524 series. This meant adding more ribs in the form of some angled metal near the wheel area, painting to match the prototypes dark brown weathering with red ribs and sill, altered decals, and a gold medal models kit. Unfortunately I did not go about filing off the center rib, which is drastically different on the Thrall Walthers car than on the NSC I am working on, but I can live with that! This one is nearly done, just a final weathering coat and drawbars left to come up with somehow:

Here is a better shot of the 48' Husky-Stack from NSk I built as well:

These both got Fox Valley wheels added also.
some new rolling stock on my D&H!

Very nice Jan! These look especially good on the new module.

I made a set of drawbars for a 3-unit Thrall from styrene bar stock that connects two MT truck-mounted coupler boxes. So far it has worked out well. I started with something like .060x.125 stock and drilled vertical holes in both ends that would fit over the post in an MT coupler box. I thinned the middle (visible) portion to something closer to a prototype drawbar size (~.080 width) and painted it rusty brown. I can try to provide more details if you're interested, but it was pretty straightforward.

    Cheers,
    Gary

P.S. I picked up an undec 48' Walthers well car at the Timonium show last week with the intention of chopping it like you did. Thanks for the inspiration. :)

    Gary,
I am VERY interested in more information as to exactly what you used for drawbars and how you did that, I am not following what and how you did it, any pictures or more info would be very much appreciated!

Can't wait to see your chop down, your work is always outstanding,

Here is some more of a photo module doing what its intended for-- taking photos! This is an Atlas dash-8 I re-numbered for a Norfolk Southern paint-out, with a similarly renumbered SD60 Wide cab trailing, weathered both, although the "winter light" in the photo washes out the visibility somewhat :tb-wink:

more winter photos to come as rolling stock and locos become "picture worthy!"
Just picked upa pair of FVM MMA boxcars so they should be ready for pix soon....

very nice work. did you ever consider lowering the plows on these units ? they look like riding quite high. but of course it might be a perspective thing.
