Very cool! (in every which way!) Gave me the chills! What's your snow? And is it fixed or loose? Great job!
Ah, now I have a much better sense of what you're up to. You're really capturing the grittiness of the northeast urban scene here; the I-95 shots are especially effective. Cheers, Gary
Thanks guys! Gary, the overpass still needs a bit of work, I am not happy with how the road stripes and color came out and I need to add something on to the backdrop there, but otherwise it adds some visual interest. MC- I use Woodland Scenics snow and it is fixed with scenic cement- which I have found yellows the snow less than any other type of glue or cement mix, as I have said previously, I have found snow to be a real pain as it is very light and when sprayed with light alcohol to facilitate glue it seems to evaporate so it takes many passes to get it right, don't know how Mark Dance gets his so nice but mine is good for the hard bitten urban area. My best, Jan
I have been working on some more of my rolling stock- the good news is that the "to do" shelf is getting less crowded!! Here are some of the projects, complete other than a final road grime airbrush: First up is a CP SD40-2, 6614. I added the rotary lights, sunshades, decals and paint, and I had to take off the snoot nose and put on an Atlas nose. This was a bigger pain to do than I thought it would be. Worse, this sat in a box for quite some time and it bent the frame plastic upward at the front. This is part of the shell for Kato and these old SD40-2 shells are no longer available so despite all my bending heating etc. it still has an uptick at the front. second up is an AGP 3-bay hopper I repainted from a MT salt hopper that I could never find a proto picture for and started to doubt existed, so I painted it out and put on a set of AGP decals. Third up is a boxcar that I previously finished the other side of, it took me forever to finish this side as I could not get the fade out color what I wanted until just recently, finally, a NW cement hopper with re-painted road numbers and safety stripes:
Here are 2 locos I am still working on. First up is an old CP Rail SD40 loco I had that I decided to turn into an SD40-3 running in DME ownership. I added sunshades, a BLMA plow, MU hoses, a miniatures by Eric winter hatch and have been redecaling where necessary- the Kato had black and white safety stripes at the rear that I had to change to red and white. Also, DME uses a different font for their road numbers than CP, closer to the SOO numbers, which I used. It still needs quite a bit of work, and I am waiting on some DME decals for the other side. The SOO SD60M was a free donation from another very kind Trainboard member. I numbered it, added the bell, gave it some traction motors, loads of decals, a winter hatch, and am working on numberboards and final weathering and it will be complete, more pictures to follow of course! my best! Jan
Karl, Thanks! Next up are the numberboards on the SD60M, finish the DME SD40-3, I have a CP 5161 covered hopper almost complete, almost finished a Con Cor autorack upgrade, couple decals left and its set, an MMA boxcar, a NS Protect II coil car finish up the weathering, and finally, one more EEC boxcar, my first using the salt method in reverse--brown paint first to be rust, salt, than white paint. Plenty to do but it will go quickly and more important- lots of fun! my best, Jan P.S. still following your Skally line blog- fantastic work you are doing there!!!
Hey Sandro- been meaning to e-mail you an order. Did the SD40-2's and SD60's (SOO) have Sinclairs, I am not seeing them in the pictures I have been working off? my best, Jan
I'm not sure about the 60's, but the SD40-2 were delivered with 3 on the cab and depending on the unit some may have been removed (or not) during maintenance.
Thanks for the picture Karl, I have been trying to find recent pictures of the SD40-2's I have modeled and its very hard to see if the Sinclairs are on there, in this photo of 6614 I do not see one: but it looks like maybe one here: anyone know if CP has Sinclairs on the SD40-2's now? my best, Jan
Jan, I've spent some time down at the CP yard in town and it is really all over the place when it comes to Sinclairs. Most CP 40-2's have at least the one left. I still see some that have the latest paint scheme but still have 3 and some older dual flag units that only have one or vice-versa. I do believe it is unit specific. So go with whatever photos you've got...
Thanks Karl, I was finding much the same studying the photos. Seems one of the more common on the locos I modeled is one sinclair on the engineers side of the roof, so here comes Sandro's order! My best, Jan
Make sure to order at least one sheet of each of the 3 sizes he offers. Modelling the CP you'll find a need for all of them at some point!
Thanks, I never would've known! Got some new pictures today (pre-former Emily rain!): Here is GP38-2 7310 picking up empties at South Jersey Building Supply: 7310 moving a string of hoppers: AGP covered hoppers: Equipment check: My best- and thanks Karl! Jan
I wanted to tell you sometimes I have a hard time telling which is the model photos and which one is the prototypes. I think you are showing what N-Scale is capable of with not only your modeling but your photography. Your fine weathered models have this mass that is rarely seen in larger scales let alone N.
Here is a Con Cor autorack I finished upgrading today: This got an N scale Kits floor, N scale of Nevada side panels, new decals, Atlas trucks and body mount MT couplers, and some weathering: and here I was foolin with some artificial lighting to see how it compared with outdoor lighting I normally use in my shots (no comparison!): After the time and investment it is better to just pick up a Red Caboose or MT rack, but I had a bunch of these and did not want them all to go to waste,
