I was poking around the Kato website - on the HO "KOBO SD45 Do it yourself" page - and they have a page on removing road numbers. Kato recommends (and sells on their website) "Mr. Color" thinner for removing road numbers.

Has anyone used this product? Does it work well for removing road numbers on Kato's (better than a pencil eraser)? It's only $2.65 on their website. . .

Nice find Dave. It looks pretty effective in their demo shots. Regular laquer thinners can eat away some plastics, (even just the fumes can melt plastic lids on containers) but this stuff is supposed to be a synthetic laquer thinner and not harm the plastic. Now if we could just get them to produce the re-numbering sets in N.....

I am also now intrigued by this. I have a few Warbonnet C44-9W's with the factory cab numbers that are too large that I would eventually like to renumber.

Yes, and the road numbers aren't the only thing wrong with these otherwise outstanding units. The cigar bands are also too small. Here's one that I've renumbered & 'rebanded' w/ MS decals. I've done half my fleet with the dreaded q-tip & brake-fluid method.

Hey Dave is that an Athearn SD75M trailing? What do you think of it? I have so far held back. It must be nicer than your initial SP disappointment?

Yep, it's an Athearn. I'm overall happy with them (I've got this one and a pair of SP SD70Ms). They aren't Kato's, but they run well and look good. As others have shared, the cab windows leave some to be desired, and the dim headlight and lack of operating ditchlights is a minus, but overall I'll give them a B+. MUCH better than the initial batch.

A word to the wise. You may be taking your chances if you order on line vs. buy in a LHS. I had to sort through 4 different Santa Fe units to find one that ran well and didn't have a warped sill on one side. Weird, both of the SP units I got ran and looked good out of the box...

Now, to look into those surface mount LED's so I can run it up front !
