Hello, I receive a lot of email advertising for the book "model trains for beginners" and it can be downloaded for $27.00. Have you heard of this book and what do you think of it? Thanks. Mo
Mo, This is going to be a hard one. Who's the publisher? Who are the authors, and editors? Where do the articles come from? I haven't noticed it because I was a beginner a long time ago, and tend to ignore stuff like this. But without that info, few members may be able to help you.
Even though I've been model railroading since I took my first steps there's always something I'm still a beginner at.
Mo, Don't waste your money. I read the ad for it here: http://beginnersguidetomodeltrains.com/ I was hearing the voice of Billy Mays (they Oxyclean guy) read it in my head. I was expecting a pop-up with Vince the Sham-wow guy to completely cover my screen. I dunno, it just smells rotten to me. Why pay $37 buck for info you can get for free. I also wasn't able to find any reviews by people who have purchased this. I wouldn't do it. This site seemes to have all the stuff the book claims to have: http://www.modeltrainguide.com/index.php Use the friendly and free advice you get here. Eric
As discussed, if you can download that book you can get the same info for free elsewhere online. If you want an actual book, buy one of the Kalmbach "Getting Started in the Hobby" books for $17.95. Cheers David
It is a terrible website: an endless text about how great this book is. I should say: look at the Kalmbach books. I have one about a N-scale layout, and I have seen some other books of them and they are worth the price.
And if the nit wit on the front of the cover of the "how to save 60%" book is the guy selling all this he is not old enough to be selling a book about everything model trains. Looks like allot of hype and bull to me I would not waist my money theres as stated way better online resourses for free!! Allen....
I thought the guy on the front of the book was Eddy Munster, those out work TV stars will do anything for a dollar. I might have been scrolling through all the claptrap too fast and missed it but I bet there's something in there about a free set of steak knives if you order in the next half hour. I agree with the others, spend your $37, (I see he's going to raise the price to $47) at the LHS on some Kalmbach 'How To' books, or donate it to Trainboard.
Mo- You have been around here for about four years. I have seen your work. I don't think you are a beginner.
What a tacky web site. It's style reminds me of those advertising a "work at home. Make thousands a week" type sales pitch. Never heard of the person named there. Did you sign up for anything which would have started bringing in those mails? Otherwise, they're spam and you can report or filter them as such. Boxcab E50
I have two book suggestions for use in general by anyone new planning a layout. One is 101 Track Plans by Linn Westcott. The other is Track Planning for Realistic Operations by John Armstrong. Other than that, I find this board and the members of my club to be excellent resources.
You'll get good information on all the threads posted on Train Board. Any book printed is out of date long before it is in print. Just read the threads that interest you.
Those are the ones I teethed on. In fact my father would not let me lay any track till I was conversant. We also had a great book on Wiring but it would be way out of date by today's standards unless you were sticking to simple DC.
Steve- Is that the old Linn Wescott book? I still have my copy. About to fall apart from age, but well worth keeping in my library. Boxcab E50
