nlaempire: So at the risk of being shot at, any thoughts on when you might start looking into the modifications needed for you Creek design to create the CN Skyview cars?
Lol. I'll get working on it this weekend. I'm at a pause on the boxcab, pending chassis options. The CN version should happen in just 1 day's time. Sent from my SPH-L900 using Tapatalk
So, the differences were minimal: - remove the skirting in all locations except at the solarium - swap the light out with th CN board - remove the side trim This model will use the same interior as the Creek car. Speaking of which, the Creek and Rapids car have been approved for printing!
Do you mean that little bumper thing just above the coupler? I'm really bad with terminology. Is the whole thing angular or is there a sligh curve on the ends? All I did was chop a flat piece off the end. I can certainly adjust it. From left to right: 1 - how it is now 2 - narrowed, all flat edges 3 - narrowed, steeper rounds
I meant the logo because it appears raised in your design. Mind you, I haven't really looked for a good photo of it to say if I'm right or wrong.
Ahhh. In some of the few photos I've found, it looks to have just a little bit of relief. Also, I exaggerated it some so there's a slight chance that someone could paint it. It's actually only .3mm but looks a lot more in the rendering. The white paint for the background of the logo will probably fill that in. I think I'm going to change that bumper as well, since it is definitely narrower, and the "grill" at the end was narrowed some as well. Here's what that change looks like: These details are just sooooo tiny. Almost razor-edge thick. I keep forgetting how small N Scale is. I just picked up a "critter" (Bachmann 3 axle switcher) and was actually shocked. I keep thinking an HO train is Lionel. Anyways... so what do you think? If you think it would be easier to just place a decal on the end, I can shave it flat. A decal would probably be better there anyway.
What great photo! Okay, changes made but another question: Every pic I've seen has the side doors closed, but showing part of the stairs, as if that lower panel was removed. Is that a change that happened or are just all of the pictures showing the car in storage or at a station?
I know the "Rapids" car originally had fold or roll down steps (don't know the exact term). They were late welded into the open position which makes it look like that small lower door panel was removed when the door is closed.
Exceptional work! A few additional differences in th CN cars CN extensively rebuilt these cars after they received them (I have a photo of one taken down to its steel). In addition to the differences you noted, here were some other changes: 1. The two smallest windows on the roof were plated over. 2. The round windows in the upper half of the Dutch doors were changed to square windows. 3. The vestibule steps were replaced with fixed steps. Your work is phenomenal. When will I be able to purchase this model from Shapeways (or you)? Don Figol
Sadly, they didn't take the time to install a door at the end. Otherwise, more of them may have survived.
Thank you for the info Seaforth7. I'll make those changes right now and post images in this reply when complete.
Seaforth7, when you say square windows, do you literally mean squares the same size and location as the circles?
Excellent work. The one last item is that there is no curve on the outside edge of the vestibule steps. CN replaced the stairs with a standard Pullman pattern stair (they did not simply weld them in the open position). As a result, the outside edge of the stair should be vertical. You can (barely) discern this from the photo of the brass model. I should also add that the curved molding at the diaphragm end of the car should not be there. All that is required is a boxy standard set of Pullman steps with no curve or molding to either side. Here is a photo of what the stairs should look like.
Is that a little closer? I know it looks a little thick, but it's about 1mm. I wanted the extra strength in that area.
