I do not know what the official class number of these units is or even what their proper name is but they operate in two or four car consists and operate speedy semi-fast and fast services on the Midland Main Line in addition to the venerable HST sets.

Apparently they are not particularly well designed and are noisy, cramped and uncomfortable; I believe they may be cascaded to other services on different routes in a few years when some more new trains of a different type are acquired for Midland services.

This train was heading up to St Pancras yesterday evening and passed through Hendon in a flash; hence the slightly blurred photo (I am still experimenting with the manual settings on my camera; clearly for a shot like this you need to be able to have a very fast shutter speed in conjunction with a wider aperture).

I made use of a continuous shooting mode available, whereby the camera keeps shooting at 2.7 images per second while you keep the button depressed; even this only yielded one image in which the train was semi-acceptably positioned.

This train passes through a few minutes after I have alighted from my "commuter" so I will try to get some better snaps on ensuing evenings.

I've now discovered these are class 170s and they operate in 3 or 6 car consists.

I think those are the new units we saw at Derby last year when we went to the Model Railway Exhibition there. Very smart looking!
