I just read several news reports on the derailment and saw several photos, and from what I can tell from the photos and reports, 0-4 people were killed (depending on the source) in the derailment and 4-7 cars derailed. I am curious as to what caused the train to derail. (I feel that speed might have something to do with it, based upon the distance that some of the cars are from the track).

CNN now reporting "at least" 4 dead. An overhead photo shows locomotive and first car lying on the their sides outside the curve, supporting a passenger's statement that the train appeared to be going too fast.

Interesting, the link must have been shut down. The link worked after I posted, which I always double-check. I'll look for another link, or photo site.

Try the CNN online news report link with 14 photos. (I just doubled-checked the CNN link, it's OK.)

The derailed train was an express operating in Push mode, from Poughkeepsie, NY to Grand Central Terminal. The control car is clearly visible in Photo #11 of the CNN link in my previous post. The engineer is among the injured, though it's surprising that he/she is still alive looking at the damage to the control cab. It looks like its front wall was opened like a sardine can. Also, the engineer is extremely lucky that the car stopped just before going into the Harlem River.

The CNN link worked. Noted the utterly moronic comments following that article. No wonder the country is falling apart, seeing that idiocy.

There always seems to be a large quantity of them after such incidents are reported. (Or as I like to say, the uninformed trying to inform.)
I find it comical in how people try to find blame for the incident in the most silly reasons.

On another forum, there was a quote from some "uninformed" organization calling for Seat Belts on ALL Trains because that would have saved three of the dead people from "flying out of the traincar"....gimme a break from "idiocy".

The next step is some idiot demanding passenger trains be banned.

It's typical of today, where everything is seen in strictly partisan terms and nobody looks at the actual incident.

I do wonder how much the speed of the train will play as a factor, though. Can't see that a derailment from July would have much to do with it, as I'd guess that the line had been repaired and used quite a bit since then...

The two derailment sites are about 1/2 mile apart, on two different branches of the NEC. The freight derailment was on the AMTK (ex-NYC West Side Freight Line) branch to NYP, about a 1/4 mile south of the Spuyten Duyvil AMTK/MNR junction. This derailment is on the MNR (ex-NYC Hudson Division) branch to GCT, about 1/4 mile east of that junction. Unfortunately, the media, only comprehending that the two accidents are in the same general geographic area, concludes that the two are irrevocably integrated, thus this is an extremely dangerous railroading location and must be condemned, if not eradicated completely. Notwithstanding that the New York Central operated this four track/two track junction since the 1850's without major incidents that I'm aware of.

Oh, one other thing...the freight derailment was on Manhattan Island, whereas the MNR derailment was in the Bronx, across the Harlem River from Manhattan. But we won't let that inconvenient fact enter into journalistic sensationalism, will we....LOL

Truth? What should it matter? They exist to make money, and let nothing stand in the way of media greed! Sell, sell, sell that sensationalism!

wow in this day of info people still get things wrong then say they are right. This is not the nec, this is a commuter line. The nec is on the other side of bronx. the accident with the garbage train was just after the station, this mess before, both are in the bronx not manhatten

After we had a passenger train incident in my area in October, there was a guy who trolled for days about how railroads are conspiring to kill people at random on behalf of the government, etc... A real loon.

Supposedly he.. (name withheld to avoid his Googling himself and showing up here)... has sued railroads over numerous grade crossing accidents and derailment fatalities and has lost nearly every suit or gotten thrown out. Scary part is, odds are he will win one eventually and he'll win big.

I just read a statement from the NTSB that said that the train was traveling at 82 mph as it entered the curve.
So, it can be said that speed was a factor but not the factor of the crash.
