Rob,Eric, and David, I had a possible solution to sold out motor assembly and want to know what you think? Is it possible to fit the can motor into a five pole housing? Just thought it might solve some of the modification issues and motor assembly availability issues. The motor that is sold with a gear is available. Scott
Possible Yes. To install a can motor in to the housing of a 3 or 5 pole motor you will first have to cut the housing apart then remove the armature, gear, with out damaging the plastic. It appears that the gear and shaft on the new can motors are machined from a single piece of steel. So you will have to drill out the bearing so the gear on the new motor can pass through the housing. Next you need to find a way to keep the motor aligned and centered in the housing maybe attach a piece of tubing to the housing like i did on my 0-6-0 upgrade that was in the Nov/DEC 2021 issue of Z Track Magazine. Probably easier to make your own Can Motor mount on a 3D printer David
David, Good point on the 3D printer mount. I have been doing that for all my modified chassis that are using can motors. I thought it might be easier for someone who doesn't have access to 3D, and to address the motor shortage. Scott
Update Thought i had posted this update last Sunday but it's not here. I guess a bit tired than i thought Anyway I put ESU LokPilot decoders in Both the Pacific and Mikado on Saturday evening and ran them for 7 hours last Sunday with out issue and today they have been running for a little over 6 hours along with one of my other test projects a MTL F7 So far so good. All 3 are running smooth and quiet on DCC.
Lets just say I have a very promising prototype running on the test track. I still need to do more testing before I can say Yes.
Mickie & I were at märklin Museum/Shop in Göppingen today. No motors, no gears. But, we had a great time! Friendly staff, then found out some relationships, chatted awhile. Running an SP GP + Freight outside proving weather durability. Multiple loops within loops. Totally unfinished.
