At one time, there was a company that sold "Railroad Maps" books. Do they still exist? If so, by chance do they have a web site? My old copy for the West is disintegrating out in my van. And am thinking it is time for a replacement copy.

Not sure which map book sets you are talking about, but if it's the US regional type that were produced by Steam Powered Video (UK) a few years back, here's their address if you'd like to contact them directly. It seems like about 8 or 9 years ago when I bought my first one (NE), then other regions followed about one per year. I would think you might be able to find one, if you were to start a search of booksellers etc.
    Good luck with this,
    Bill

OK, today's our lucky day (maybe).
If the map book you're looking for IS the one by Steam Powered Video (UK), I found the series still available at the first bookseller I checked (link below). I hope this helps.

I'll need to look at my book more closely for info. But what I have was out in the 1980's. Before those you've linked. I don't know if there is any connection between the two. right now I'm not going out to the old van. It was seven below zero this morning. [IMG]

On a crumbling page, I found their name. Here it is:

    Hmmmmm...very interesting!
The link I posted above is for Joe McMillan's website. He has used the "MacPub" trademark in the past. Wonder if it's the same company???
Only big difference I see is that Joe is in Arvada, CO not Colorado Springs.
Maybe you could email him and see if he has any info on getting another book, outside of eBay. Hope you can find one.

    Bill-

I don't believe these are the same books. If they are, content has been rearranged. Such that I'd need to buy at least two books to replace one. Wish I could see what the interior pages look like. Then I'd know if these were a suitable substitute. I really like my old book.

Ken, I have a few of them for the areas I'm most interested in, and they are really well done up. They show all trackage (plus dashed lines for track abandoned or not in use), and who the current and former carriers are for each line, including joint use. They are drawn/printed on pure white paper, and do not have any topographical info. Best part I like about them is that they show and identify things like power plants etc (including the track layout such as balloon tracks and/or number of tracks under the tipple etc).
I could scan a page from one of them and send to you if you'd like. My scanner is messed-up right now, as whatever I scan comes out with yellow stripes on it, so the clarity wouldn't be the best, but at least you could see what one page looks like.
Let me know if that would help you.

Could you scan a page? When you have a free minute. Perhaps I can tell from that if they are similar.

    Thanks! :D

Received two scans of the same page. This is quite difefrent from my tattered old book. Which shows adjacent roads, and much more that would aid the foamer-chaser. Or is there other info on seperate pages?

No, there's no road/highway info on these maps....just railroad info. Don't know why you got two scans..(??)...no extra charge!! [IMG]

p.s. there are blow-up maps of major metro areas too.

Thanks for the help! Darn! It appears these books are not what I'm seeking.

No problem on receiving the two scans. I'll just send them both back for a refund. Get twice my money back! [IMG]

I've had to rely on a Rand McNally Railroad Atlas, plys a regular road atlas, for my railfanning trips. My RR Atlas is circa early 1980s, and includes WP, MP, MKT, SOO, MILW- in short, all those cool fallen flags (except for the coolest of course, Frisco).

Not sure if RMN still puts one out, though.......

With the concerns of recent years, I wonder if anyone publishes the type of maps that my poor, disintergrating old book contained.

I believe what you're looking for can be found at the URL below. Click the Map Catalog link. I have one of their Atlases and two wall maps. Very nice.

Can't tell from their web site- Do these show the roads and highways? Or just the RR?

Several states (Texas, Wyoming, Colorad for instance) have gazetteers put out by a private form that shows roads, railroads, towns, parks, etc. with pretty good detail- all they lack are the markings found on topological maps for altitude.

I use a Maine Gazetteer to help find my way around (or get lost faster), as well as find the railroad lines to chase. It never leaves the car.
