Warbonnet the official magazine of the Santa Fe Railway Historical & Modeling Society, Second quarter 2000 issue, page 30, has a prototype photo of BX-37 #146454 with the slogan "The Chief Famous Streamliner West" identical to your photo, and the same A.T.S.F. lettering with periods. The photo is not dated, and it does not show the map side.

Santa Fe Modeler November December 1985 p.6 has the same photo and identifies it as taken when the car was brand new in 1942.
p.7 has ATSF BX-37 #146936 after being repainted in May 1953 with ATSF without the periods, and the later "Super Chief" slogan.
p,.7 also has BX-37 #145885 as repainted August 1952, ATSF no periods, later version of Chief slogan, "The route of the Chief All Pullman Chicago-Los Angeles Streamliner"
p.8 shows BX-37 #142172, taken late 1950s, with ATSF no periods, with the Ship and Travel slogan which was applied between 1947 and 1959 in place of the map when a car was built new or repainted.

As a history researcher, I know that photo documentation simply does not exist for the appearance of every specific car in every period. The manufacturer seems to have used a photo of the specific car as new in 1942 and duplicated it well as it looked THEN. When would it have needed to b e repainted? Some cars were repainted in 1952 and 53 with updated schemes we know. All cars in that # series? We don't know. It would be a good guess that one car- maybe even that specific # car was in original paint in 1951. The original paint would probably be faded but readable and the car would have some dirt and dust, but not so goshawful yucky like some overdone weathering jobs that it would have already needed repainting.

    Hi Ken
thanks very much for your input
what do you think about this pic is there a date from the 50's on the side ?
In your opinion the maps cars or boxcars with any slogan like The Chief The Scout El Capitan etc.would have still be in service in 1953 ?
or if not generally speaking until which time period do you expect to find this map boxcars still in service in the original unrepainted paint scheme ?
    thanks very much

It is fairly plain there is a date from the 1950s, says 1951 when it was serviced in some way. Obviously NOT repainted! It is the original paint, A.T.S.F. and slogan from early 40s but much weathered away.
