Here's an update for the corner module.

The left segment needs some work and a trestle.

    Wolfgang,
I was just reading through your thread here, and I must say it is excellent. Your work is so clean and consistent!
I see that you use tile adhesive over your foam. I was actually thinking about it the other day when I was moving a left over bag from a home reno. project. How does it work for you? It is very sticky, and doesn't settle much, so I can see that it could be shaped well. Have you ever tried painting it with washes, similar to plaster?
I would love to know your thoughts on it.

    Thanks,

Tile adhesive has a much longer open time than plaster - mixed properly. It gives a hard surface, just right for the next step with Woodland.
I didn't try to paint it. I guess you should sand it before painting a little bit.
With more water you can "paint it" with a brush. Or with a wet brush you can smooth it.

    Now I've finished one tunnel.
Here you're, mud tunnel at the Silver Valley RR.

    I have been following this thread with interest, because I am building a layout in sections, two of which are cut at an angle which is not square- CargoDock section 7 and causeway section 9- top right in plan below;
    and
another section break where the track does not cross the break at right angles- between the roundhouse section and westport section at the bottom of this plan. This break will also split a crossover between more or less parallel tracks, only some of which are shown in this "Phase 1" plane.

The 45 degree angle of the sections, and the section cut in the middle of the curve, at upper right was necessary to allow clearance to open a door and gain access to the train room.

The curve between sections 2 and 3 is not problem because I have permanently joined the two sections together, partly for reasons of leg support in a corner and partly for the curve and other track considerations.

This is the detailed plan of the CargoDock section (with a rectangular section to go "aisleward" in front of it). Track will disappear behind buildings etc in top right corner to go into a compoletely different scene. In fact, the track on the curve is actually "not supposed to be there"- it is used for hidden staging, but I needed to keep it open in order to have the shrimpboat harbor scene at the back.

I chose to expose a track with mainline trains running where they are not supposed to on the prototype, in order to have the shrimpboat harbor visible at the back of the scene where it exists in the prototype.

The track connects to a causeway section which represents the schematic "other end" of the layout, where the track from the Island Seaport has crossed a 2 mile long masonry arch causeway to the mainland at "Bay Point." The angled cut across the section is just below the bottom of the picture...

Keep telling me your angled modules work. Please, work.

Just a little more. I thought Wolfgang's use of antique irons to weight the foam during glung was interesting.

I used a section of real narrow-gauge rail to weight down the foam surface on one section of my standard gauge layout.

And for another section on which the foam was coming loose (yellow arrow), I used something even more antique to weight it down-- the 12,000 year old fossilized thigh bone of a prehistoric wooly mammoth.

You know, make use of what you've got laying around...

Well, I thought the antique flat irons were unique, but this takes the prize for at least today! I can get away with a fair amount, but if I were to drag this into the house, my wife would boot me back out the door.

Ken, if I didn't know you better, I might say "have a nice trip." Then again, because we're aware of your quirks and habits, I'd better say "have a nice trip." :tb-tongue:

I'm anxious to see the way that rock facing is finished. Will that be a dry waterway? Or a great place for fly fishing?

The module should be one or two foot more deep to the floor. But then I would run into problems.
At first I thought about a lake, but now I will model some dry landscape. You will see.

    Looking good so far.

What material is oozing out to the left of, and around the rocks in the top photo?

Sure wish I possessed your ability to picture in mind these finished scenes. They are coming out just great.

That's insulating foam. I bought it at the DIY store. You can see it at the previous pictures, too.

Thanks, I never thought of using it as an adhesive for rocks and stuff.

The foam is not the adhesive. The liquid gypsum "glues" at the foam or I glue the castings with white glue to the foam.
