    Hay everybody,

I have recently discovered google earth. If you have not seen this yet, then you really need to check this out. You can see some great RR stuff, sometimes really up close too! One of my favorite things to look at is train yards and ports with either container, coal or auto unloading facilities. But one thing I have not been able to find is old roundhouses and turntables that might still be standing. Does anyone have any locations of any roundhouses and or turntables, addresses would be helpful. If you know of any, let me know. Ill post any good pics I find here!

    Thanks

Dave, find the famous three-stall roundhouse and turntable at Brooklyn yard in Portland, OR by entering the intersection of SE 17th Avenue and Holgate Blvd. in Portland. Home of 4449 and 700. [IMG]

There is a turntable in Clifton Forge, VA, and if you find the yard you will find the table. Also Pasco, WA. :D

Yes I have tried to do a search on Google and yahoo. All I got was pages for online hobby shops selling kits. I even did a search for "historical roundhouses/turntables".

Jim, that’s exactly the info I was looking for. Ill start looking, thanks!

    Two come to mind:

UP's roundhouse at the yard in Cheyenne, YW. Turntable is still active, as the roundhouse is used as storage for the 6936, one of the rotary plows, and the gift shop car Harriman.

Maine Eastern has a two-stall roundhouse at Rockland, ME, snd there's a MERR Alco in there right now. Turntable in front. It's along US 1 on the south side of town.

Good work, Dave. The Portland image shows Doyle's RS-3 outside between the house and the turntable. Looks like maybe 700's tender, too. There is a relatively new roundhouse at Steamtown in Scranton, PA that I forgot.

You might try looking in Durango, CO for an image of their turntable. Also years ago part of an old turntable was still in place in Carlin, NV.

Some more places to try are the CSX yard in Atlanta GA, The CSX yard in Nashville TN, the CSX yard in Birmingham AL, the BNSF yard in Birmingham AL, and the Tennessee Valley Railroad and Museum in Chattanooga TN. Sorry that I don't know any of the street addresses for you.

Google Earth shows a turntable in Vicksburg, MS. It is in a yard close to the east bank of the Mississippi River, a mile or two north of the I-20 and KCS bridges which are easily seen.

And what turntables get replaced by. Notice the
mini wye center of the photo due north from the fuel
tank. BNSF Alliance, Ne yards zoom out the see the
whole yard. North yard (runs east/west) is what
you see right now, South yard (runs north/south)
is off the south west end of north yard.

Here is the Tennessee Valley RR turntable in Chattanooga. There is/was also a roundhouse I remember seeing somewhere near Gary, Indiana I believe. I saw it several years ago while flying over the area. I will have to try to figure out exactly where.

Ok, I found the Gary area one right off the bat. Its Southwest of the Gary Airport not too far. Do I feel lucky! Anyway copy these coordinates into Google Earth-looks like there is even a coal tower there.

Try and pull up the NS East Wayne Yards between Ft.Wayne and NewHaven Indiana.
There is still a Turntable out in the yards Used for turning Freight cars and engines.
What about Frankfort Indiana, There is still the Concrete coaling tower standing with the NKP logo. I also think that the Roundhouse is up too, I dont know about the turntable?

    The Cloverleaf still lives!!!!!!! Kevin

I know that there is an active turntable on CSX in Atlanta, and Nashville. THere is one also in Chattanooga at TVRM. There used to be one in B'ham, AL but it has been removed. There is also a turntable in Summerville, GA. Right downtown in the middle of the city park. Spencer shops has one aswell. It is the home of the NC transportaion museum.
