Was on the way to pick up the inlaws coming in from Calgary at the airport and saw a headlight. Had the time and look what I found: Yep, a FULLY FUNCTIONAL SD9 as the second unit on one of the daily rock trains in Carrollton. This is one of the best I've ever caught. First time I've ever (and probally will ever) run across an SD9 in action . And they were waiting for....... [ March 26, 2005, 10:32 PM: Message edited by: txronharris ]
The South bound rock train headed up by these guys: This particular day of railfanning (which only lasted about 20 minuites) has to be the best I can remember for content. Hope you guys share my enthusiasm! [ March 26, 2005, 10:43 PM: Message edited by: txronharris ]
The SD7, and SD9 are my favorite diesels. Anone know how many are left? On BNSF? Other RR? Boxcab E50
Ron, great shots! Is 4705 a usual number for a Superfleet Dash 9? I thought all the 4xxx were H2 colors... ?
Thanks guys. Always a pleasure to share with you all here. Alan, that's cool we caught the same loco in different spots. Your pic is better though!
I counted 78 units (SD-9s) on the BNSF roster. Alliance Nebraska has a few sitting around. They were recently used as switch engines. They are used on trains once in a great while. They were put aside when RCO was introduced.
Both of those rock trains pass thru Sherman- dang, wish I wasn't working yesterday or today....... The rock trains on the ex-Frisco line get lots of old power, mostly older 6-axle diesels. I'll have to swing by the yard in Sherman when I get home.
Ron: Great shot of the SD9. I may have one of those around here taken before the days of digital. Maybe I can scan it in today. How about the vents along the sill? On Espee, this was one way to identify the very earliest engines. Anyone know the heritage of this one?
I must be spoiled, the BNSF uses a 3 unit set of SD-9s daily here for it's transfer run to the CP. Still a great catch! Joe
