Well I thought about this a couple of times and will just say I have too many locomotives to list, but it is heavy in ATSF, DRGW, SP, NYC, NS, CSX and SRR. With a pretty large smattering of other roads where there is passenger equipment like Amtrak, CBQ and UP.
Well I have way to many to list 1,500 or so.. I will post a couple of stots.. 150 on the layout the rest on the walls..
What's next on the roster list? Quote: Todd W Treaster; 624956 Well I have way to many to list 1,500 or so.. I will post a couple of stots.. 150 on the layout the rest on the walls.. Awsome Todd! Glad to see a few PA's there too...cool:
With but 104 locomotives I now feel much; much better - I thought I had "issues" but now realize I am fine...(twitch)...just fine (twitch).... excuse me; I have to internet shop for another FP7 unit...................................:tb-biggrin:
Sort Order on the Shelf I have a nice Excel inventory sheet that can sort by every which way. But, it would be a lot easier if I just put them on the shelves by some order, too. maybe from lowest engine number to highest? Anything would be better than taking ten minutes to find one every time I change out the power consist. How do you guys sort them on the shelves? Road name?
I have a spreadsheet, too. But recently I found out that I might have overwritten something instead of inserted a new line On the long run I will switch to a real database system, but this requires some programming, which takes time and energy. Another point that came to my mind: assume there is someone with "not so nice intentions", this person might check the shopping lists here and then try to get the stuff, i.e. break in the respective place. Maybe it is not realistic, but not unthinkable either. Just a thought, as I said.
Hopefully I will have sold most of them by then. The thing is, they would not get much of any value, they don't sell today for anywhere near what they originally sold for. Especially the non-DCC ready models. I have been trying to unload all the brand new boxed locomotives I have on the shelf and have not had much luck at any "reasonable" price.
If I had my locos on shelves, I imagine I would sort them the way I do my CDs and DVDs: Alphabetically and numerically. My CDs are alphabetical by artist and numercally by release year, my DVDs by title and by volume number if there's more than one movie per series. So, alphabetically by road name, then by builder, then model number, and finally, road number. If there's one thing I'm anal about, it's my movies and CDs. lol Makes them a lot easier to find when I want one (and I have over 500 CDs at last count).
Shelves work very well for organizing collections when stacked the way that Russ shows, however, most of us probably like to see the models in profile just for the beauty of the pieces so the long wall shelves like Secret Weaon' is preferable... albeit... requiring much more space. There comes a point in a 'collection' that the wall space become untenable and the bookcase or shelving opton is next best solution. I keep my 'collecton' in several see-thru storage bins on wheels... not enough wall space for long shelves for profile display. The storage bins are labled for the Roadname (locomotives) and the rolling stock is grouped by 'type' (boxcar, reefer, gondola etc). Some large items are kept in bookcases... such as Kato sets & large steamers (Big Boys, Challengers, Cab-forwards).
