Over the last few weeks I've seen some YouTubers getting "custom" locomotives made by Lionel. How do these come about? Does anyone know the backstory on these? I'm assuming not just anyone can have a custom engine made. I did see Lionel has their custom boxcars for offer on their website. And I am aware there are painters who will do a custom shell for guys. Any info is appreciated.
Both Lionel and MTH will make custom runs of just about anything they make but have a minimum order. I think it’s 40 units for MTH and more for Lionel. MTH made this ES44 for the O Gauge Forum (not the OGR forum). MTH did the basic painting and the decals were applied and sealed by the OGF.
The O Scale Lionel club did this one as well, i found and bought on ebay for good price and it runs great.
