What would be the best approach to equip this engine with a dcc decoder (no sound)? And what would be the recommended decoder for the easiest possible install?
You need to fully isolate the motor from the frame (milling and kapton tape), then also cut a pocket for the decoder to sit in. You will also need to run wires for the lights. Any of the small motor decoders will work: Digitrax, TCS, Zimo or ESU. I have installed ESU LokPilot 5 Micro DCC decoders into the LifeLike PAs and Erie Builts and they run beautifully. This is an ESU LokPilot 5 Micro (on left), solder board for light hookup (headlamp and Mars light) and 2 stay alive capacitors (440uF) This shows the interior channel I milled to help isolate the motor, and leave room for the wires to come down. You can see in the above photo how I also mill out the top of the frame above the motor cap. I will say, modifying these frames is not for the faint of heart.
Another option: Check the option for putting the shell on a Kato PA ( http://www.spookshow.net/loco/llpa.html ) if you are really into keeping the shell and want DCC. Might be cheaper though to sell it and look for a Kato PA. I found a couple that were $60 each with DCC on 'E'. Sumner
For this type of engine, should I go for the Lokpilot 5 Micro DCC, or the Digitrax DZ126T will be fine? The 1st one is smaller, but the 2nd is cheaper
Will I have less troubles to install the smaller one, or the size difference is not significant enough?
Size isn't that different, always easier to make a large pocket, anyway. Personally, I prefer the significantly better motor control in the ESUs, so the added cost is worth it.
french_guy I would certainly support Rick's choice. I will have to say that I have several multi unit consists, such as my F's, that have the DZ126T installed. They perform OK but the LokPilot would be better. The size of the DZ126T is 14mmx7.13mmx3.25mm . The size for the LP5 Nicro NMRA DCC is 8mmx7mmx2.4MM. Very small and easy to install and, at the shop that I purchase from, it is only $4.00 more than the DZ, well worth it. Have fun and be well, Carl
