Wow! That's the answer all right. I think it might be simpler to scale it all out.

    Hello Richard320,

I typically try not to get too excited, but that link is ******* awesome!!
I browsed around a little and found 39 pictures, including drawings, for Tacoma Union Station!! I am completely and utterly blown away. The level of detail, the wealth of information: Wow. How could I have missed that site in my quest for good pictures of the Tacoma Union Station.

The last excuse for not starting the scratchbuild project are gone, I will tackle this as my next project.

Many thanks for sharing this link!!

    Cheers
    Dirk

If you get a chance check out EVL N scale club in LA located in Travel town, they used to have a pretty good rendition of LAUPT there. Heck they have a scale replica of Roseville yard circa early 1970s!

The scratch building seems the way to go. But you may find some help with that Kit O Mat and combining that with Plastruct products for what Kit O Mat can't reproduce. O rfood for thought Google Sketch it Up 6 might help you do what you want.

Wow! Thank you Charger. I may have bitten off more than I can chew with this one since I have never done this before. I sure do want this model in the worst way. It will go with all my different passenger trains, except the GG1.

Greaat! I go to download SketchUp 6 and find out that it will not operate with my system. I have OSX 3.9. Looks like that ends it for me!

It looks like Clever Models is not so clever anymore. Tried email several times without success. Just telephoned them and received a voice mail stating that their message center is full and that I will be promptly disconnected. They started in 2005 and I guess they ended in 2008 unless someone else knows something that I don't.

Not to hijack your thread, but I just switched from OSX 3.9 to OSX 4, and other then the Widgets feature, I am not all that impressed, everything seems to be running slower.

That's why I haven't changed operating systems because I have read too many negative things about OS 10.4. I will wait a little longer until they clean up the bugs.

Oh Lord, give me a break. I know I will have to do that. I am having such a hard time trying get figure this thing out. I was hoping I could find some company that would build it as a kit. I want this station so much that I am getting frustrated. I don't think I have the skills to scratch build this station and do a good job. I tried contacting Clever Models but I don't think they are in business anymore. I wish some company would come out with it as a kit real soon. lol

Sorry... didn't mean to add to your frustration. I really hope you find a solution. It sounds like an exciting project. But this thread got me to thinking about the tacos from the little restaurant at the Union Station end of Olvera Street. Nice memories. :)

Why don't you build a MOCK UP of LAUPT first. Be satisfied that it is not going to be superdetailed, but build a cardboard mockup. First try for the general shape of the buildings. See how you like it. If need be, cut one part out and replace it until it looks right-- or that is, the general shape and bulk of it looks right. Just use colored paper or cardstock at first for the tile roof.

After several weeks...or months..of living with the boxy mockup, build a BETTER mockup. Print out the sides and roof tiles with texture created on a computer art program and printed out on index-card-weight cardstock. Will run through most printers. That could probably set the scene for a year or more while you develop the skills to build a styrene or plaster or whatever superdetailed model. Who knows, the superdetailed model may not be needed after all.

Olvera Street will probably be on the background or in low relief. Actually, the post office building is more important to the RR scene than Olvera Street.

I don't remember if I have shown this in this thread. sorry if it's a repeat. This is an example of a cardboard building I build using a photocopy of a scale drawing with doors and windows, brick paper and a few pieces of cardboard.
