    Hi all.

Anyone know what sort of foam Kato uses when they package a loco model? I have a couple of kitbashed engines that I'd like to cut foam for, so they dont bounce around in their boxes too much.

Anyone have any better suggestions for this?

    Thanks!

Hi Amanda, Kato uses a type High Density Foam in their locomotive boxes. I'm not sure of the brand name. You maybe able to find something similar in a home improvement store or a store that sells upholstery supplies.

Yes, high density but be VERY careful on the foam from home improvement stores. They may not be plastic friendly and over a short time may stick to or ruin the shell's paint.

I've had luck with electronics grade foam but I don't know how to distinguish that from regular foam. I get the foam when the electronics are first taken out of the foam cradle. Then I know it's electronics grade. :)

I had one rolling stock car ruined by the "bad" foam.

Kato does sell several versions of their bookcase train set containers. They have the same foam as individual locomotive releases.

Good point Jack! Thanks much; that might be perfect for me, actually. I'm going to be seriously downsizing my N scale collection, keeping my NYC locos and perhaps a dozen freight cars for now. A couple of those Kato bookcase cases might be exactly the thing for me.
