Was down at CP's (D&H) Kenwood yard today in Albany, NY. After a few days of 60+ degree weather here in the northeast, it appears the grass thinks it is springtime and it is December!! The seeds were courtesy of a leaky grain hopper, and the nice weather with a little rain, and viola! Instant Grass!!!!
Harron. To me this is a beautiful pic. It shows that it doesn't take a Train to make things interesting. A signal a phone booth a tower anything but the head end of a train. I guess that I rode to many head ends unless it is something new I have no interest. Arthur.
Alan. Try taking a couple roles of film. Get a couple shots of the head end of the train. Then shoot everything that pretains to railroading. Switches, signals,Phone boxes, towers Special cars, people just every thing no matter how trivial. You may think it is garbage but the finished product will surprise you. I rarely shoot a train unless it is a new model. Arthur.
To me, the compression has a lot to do with this shot. If you look at most train magazines, they are taken with a lense in the 35-70 mm range, usually around 50 mm. This photo was taken with a little zoom, I think around 200 mm, which creats some "compression" in the photo. Actually, these are detail shots for a modeling project (see my thread in Layout Design for a couple more). Just happens to come out, guess cause I'm used to a certain feel for a shot. That photography class this semester may have helped too.
The first thing I noticed was the rails! If we laid our rails to look like the ones shown, we couldn't keep anything on the track! I like to see an old steamer coming head-on weaving and hunting over rough track like that, because it brings back memories of that roller-coaster ride in the cab!
Watash, that reminds me of my first visit to the USA. I was being driven through Bay City, Michigan, when we crossed a track that was much worse than those in the pic. I remarked that it must be a derelict track, but my host said that it is still regularly used and he saw a locomotive and a few cars running on it a couple of days before He also said trains moved very slowly over that track
