Glue bottles sort of gone and cow untipped. However, after all that tipping, it's coming out buttermilk
Trying to get an idea of how to do a bigger grain elevator. Looking for some thoughts? Headhouse to the left or right? (I'm leaning toward the right end) Silo layout good or should I take the two off the right end and make it longer on the left?
Happy Monday everyone! Got a little done over Turkey day and the weekend. Painted some stuff to use as hand rails Then started working on storage tanks. Made some access hatches for these tanks by using a hole punch and some super thin styrene Then added some pipes to these tanks. My fine tip on the glue had a bad moment so that will be a fig at some point. Added side access hatches. and some walkway
With that done and progress on parts for Cem-Co, I started placing the storage tanks. Thinking I may need one or two small tanks about the size of a wine cork. That and a roof for the loading platform will get the big stuff done. Detail and more pipes will follow later on. Here are a few views. For this whole complex, there are only a few things brought recently for it. Most of the stuff came from the parts box and my older layouts. Even the stuff from the parts box was old. The big sphere tank is new as are the Plastruct ladders. I will also be picking up a piece of corrugated styrene hopefully to help finish the platform roof. May also get some Gold Medal chain link fence at some point as well. So far, I feel like it's actually coming together pretty good.
Absolutely beautiful and inspiring!!!!! I LOVE those cows! You should get one standing in front of a "Eat More Chicken" billboard that you can make yourself. Clever use of empty tape center cores to make those tanks. My problem would be using up that much tape. We hardly use ONE up in a year!
So from there, it's off to what is the last big scene project for the layout. The big grain elevator. Posted this pick Saturday but here it is again for reference. I'm going to use the headhouse from the Walthers grain elevator kit. The silos in that kit felt a little short to me compared to the height of the head house plus they were a bit wider than I had room for. I'm thinking with some creative roofing all the way to the backdrop, these will still have the feel of double deep all the way across (hopefully anyway). Now just have to decide on the layout for them. I used my saw to cut 8 inch sections from a supposedly 10 foot piece of 1 1/4 inch pvc pipe. Here we are ready to cut. My son actually help hold the pipe as I cut. It worked great but I looked like I had been snowed on when done. In between, I did manage to run a couple of trains. Here is a local and coal drag siting next to each other on the main. All in all a good weekend. We go the Christmas tree up and mostly decorated as well. The wife did the out door lights. Hope you all are doing well, had a good weekend, and are now getting ready for the Christmas season!
Thank you sir! That's many years of collecting tape roll cores from home and office. One way to possibly get some gathered up is to ask at stores that are doing gift wrapping this time of year to see if they happen to have any empty tape cores that they will give you. You never know.
Very nice! I like the new group of trees, and the taller, larger grain elevator will be a big impact on the layout.
You have been busy over the holiday and weekend, great job. Everything looks fantastic. I'm looking forward to seeing how you do the pipelines, need to add pipelines to my oil depot. Joe
Ventured out on Monday and finally found a suitable sheet of styrene to make the roof for the tank car loading platform. Couldn't find any white color evergreen sheets that fit what I wanted so ended up with a sheet of Plastruct that will work but it is a tan color so will have to wait for a 70+ degree dat to spray boom it. It seems if you want something other that just a plain flat sheet, the prices are way out of line for what you get. That's my morning rant.
@BNSF FAN, I know what you mean about patterned and color styrene. Went to hobby shop in Owasso yesterday afternoon to purchase HO brick styrene for the Ft. Scott Depot and the price was twice that of plain. They were out of stock so they ordered some which I'll get it in about a week. Joe
